Hazel Eugenia Crossno

Hazel Eugenia Crossno, age 79, of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Hazel was born June 16, 1934, in Ware Shoals, S.C., to the late Jesse R. and Lula Mae Turner Webb. Hazel was a longtime Oak Ridger and a member of Robertsville Baptist Church. She was last employed by Anderson Memorial Gardens as office manager. She was a member of the AmVets Auxiliary, and enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, bingo, and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years.

In addition to her parents, Hazel is preceded in death by her infant son Jerry D. Larabee and her brother Robert “Danny” Webb. [Read more…]

Helen Freeman French

Helen Freeman French, born Dec. 23, 1934, died Oct. 9, 2013.

She was born a coal miner’s daughter and left this earthly world a ROSE.

Devoted wife and mother who lived a full beautiful life. Helping her husband James D. French in the successful French’s Food Markets from 1955-1980, while at the same time actively involved in every aspect of her three children’s world. Den mother, room mother, PTA, ballgames, and fundraisers, no matter what it was, she was always there.

Helen and her husband enjoyed traveling the world together to Spain, Hawaii, Africa, Italy, the Caribbean Islands, and many other places until Jim’s death in 1983. They also enjoyed boating and going on weekend excursions with other members of the Oak Ridge Boat Club. Helen continued her involvement with the same group until her illness in 2010. [Read more…]

Jeffrey Talbott, age 49, of Andersonville, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Andersonville.

Jeff was an outdoorsman, loved camping, going to the lake, and boating. He loved being with friends and family. Jeff was a member of 1st Baptist Church Andersonville but had recently been attending Wolf Valley Baptist Church.

Jeff is survived by his parents, Glenn and Ocie Talbott of Andersonville; girlfriend, Donna Kirkpatrick of Heiskell; brother, Bob Talbott of Andersonville; and sisters, Janet Robinson (Dallas Brock) of Halls, Sandy Smith of Knoxville, Susan Riggs (Curtis) of Lake City, and Dorothy Mack of Knoxville, Missi Hembree of Snellville, Ga. Clara Jane Butler, age 82, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Butler was born on Dec. 28, 1930, in Oliver Springs. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

Clara was a homemaker, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a member of the Kellytown Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Ronald King Hull of Harriman died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the age of 73.

As a long time Oak Ridge resident, he was a graduate of Oak Ridge city schools, attended Tennessee Technological University, and later served in the United States Navy. He retired from K-25 after 32 years of employment.

Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents C.C. and Virginia Hull and his brother Samuel Hull.

He is survived by his wife Deborah Faye Hull, daughters Kelly Moore and Jasmine Brown, as well as grandchildren Andrew Moore, Shelly Brown Davis, and twins Megan and Michael Brown, and great-grandchild Isabella Davis. [Read more…]

James Thomas “Jim” Lowery, age 63, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Lowery was born Sept. 23, 1950, in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident.

Jim was employed as a supervisor at the Y-12 federal plant in Oak Ridge.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Ridge and a member of the Eastfork Masonic Lodge #460 F & AM. He enjoyed spending time with his family and researching genealogy. [Read more…]

Fred Adrian Heddleson

Fred Adrian Heddleson, age 96, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the NHC Health Care Center.

Born March 28, 1917, in New Matamoras, Ohio, he was the son of Richard David Heddleson and Grace Beaver Heddleson, who preceded him in death, as did his sister, Vivian Karash, and his wives, Margaret (Peggy) Heddleson, Freda Fisher, and Ruth Bowen.

He grew up in New Matamoras and graduated from Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. After graduation and during World War II, he worked in development of the Martin aircraft top machine gun turret and electric devices for motors of the Norden bomb sight.

In 1952, Mr. Heddleson and his family moved to Oak Ridge. As an engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, his career path led to nuclear safety information and commercial nuclear power plant safety systems. [Read more…]

Orangie Jean Craig, age 95, a resident of Clinton and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Craig was born on Nov. 30, 1917, in Robbins, Tenn. She later moved to Oneida, where she continued to live until her move to Oliver Springs in 1932.

Following the move to Oliver Springs she married her husband, Glen Craig, in 1938.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a sales clerk in several area dry good stores. [Read more…]

Cora Gregory Sluss

Cora Gregory Sluss, age 91, a resident of Knoxville and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the Island Home Park Health and Rehab Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Sluss was born Nov. 1, 1921, in the Cades Cove Community in Blount County. When she was seven years old, she moved to the family farm in Sevier County. Following her marriage to her late husband, Charles Sluss, she moved to Oak Ridge, where her husband was employed in the development of the Manhattan Project.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, where she was very active in the Joy Sunday School class. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Mt. Pisgah Print Shop when she was physically able. [Read more…]

Eugene F. Young, age 81, departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his home in Oxford, Ohio.

A native of Oliver Springs, he was born June 22, 1932, to the union of the late Lloyd and Claudine Young. Gene, as he was known to many, was a businessman in Oxford, Ohio, area for more than 40 years as a builder. He is survived by his loving daughter, Hazel Burum Arnwine of Oak Ridge; his two sisters Virginia Grace Walker of Oxford, Ohio, who was devoted to his care, and Linda Weaver of New York, N.Y.; his two brothers Charles Earl Boyd of Oliver Springs, and Avril Hall of Oak Ridge; one aunt, Clara Hall Hughes of Oak Ridge; his special “angel,” Julia Jessup of Oxford, Ohio; Tony Terrell, business partner and longtime friend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
