Billy Kay Shope Sr., age 60, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at his residence.

Billy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to fish, and spending time with his grandkids. Billy was of the Baptist faith. He was a hard worker all through his life doing carpentry and concrete work. Billy was a very honest and dependable person.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Shope; sister, Mary Anne Shope; and several other sisters and brothers. [Read more…]

Joy Justice

Joy Justice, age 67, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, at her home.

Joy was born September 29, 1946, in the Rosedale Community in Anderson County. She lived in Rosedale throughout her childhood, moving to Oliver Springs as a teenager, where she has lived for over 50 years.

Joy retired as a technical writer in February 2014 at EG&G, ORTEC Inc., in Oak Ridge following more than 30 years of employment.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, chapter 211, in Oliver Springs.

She enjoyed reading, being active in her Church and the Eastern Star, and most importantly, spoiling her grandchildren. [Read more…]

Herman L. “Bud” Bracken

Herman L. “Bud” Bracken, age 88, a resident of Oak Ridge, passed away, Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the Ben Atchley Tennessee Veterans Home in Knoxville.

Mr. Bracken was born March 26, 1926, in Chimney Rock, N.C. He and his family moved to Oak Ridge in 1943.

“Bud” was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and served his country in World War II. While serving in the Army, on his 19th birthday he boarded a ship headed for the invasion of Okinawa. Three months later, the bomb was dropped, and Japan surrendered.

After his return to the United States, he was again on a ship headed for South Korea. In 1949, he was discharged from the U.S. Army and then he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and he served for a total of 21 years, six months, and 25 days. While serving, he received several medals, citations, ribbons, and commendations. [Read more…]

Ruth was born July 22, 1959, in Dayton, Ohio. She moved to Tennessee in 1983.

Bernard Garren Jenkins passed away on Saturday, May 24, at his home in Oak Ridge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolora McCaslin Jenkins, and brother, James Ray Jenkins.

He was born April 27, 1918, in Vonore, Tenn. He graduated from Vonore High School in 1937 and then attended Carson Newman College.

He married Dolora Jenkins on January 6, 1940. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946. They settled in Oak Ridge in 1944, and he worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 42 years. [Read more…]

Nettie Frances Hanks Hill, age 88 of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, passed away at the Methodist Medical Center surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

She was born on April 24, 1926, in Columbus, Mississippi, and was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie E. Breazeale Hanks of Columbus, Mississippi, and Luke Jackson Hanks Jr. of Bolivar, Tennessee; her brother, Luke Jackson Hanks III; and sister, Sarah Margaret Hanks Sternberg of Columbus, Mississippi.

Nettie was a devoted homemaker and loving wife of John Walter Hill Jr., her surviving husband of 64 years. Nettie and John inspired many with their dedication and support of the Oak Ridge community and the First United Methodist Church, serving on many boards and committees.

She is survived by her two daughters Mary Jane Hill of Roswell, Georgia, and Sandy Hill Whitten of Santa Margarita, California, and she was a loving grandmother to Ursula Gabrielle Rogers of Costa Mesa, California. [Read more…]

Robert Spencer Crouse

Robert Spencer Crouse, age 89, of Clinton, died Thursday, May 22, 2014.

He was born June 14, 1924 in Rutherford, Tennessee, one of seven children born to Alice Keathley Crouse and Charles Hatton Crouse.

Mr. Crouse was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a bomber pilot. He was stationed in Sicily and flew missions all around the Mediterranean. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Crouse retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, where he was a chemical engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He was a longtime member of Glenwood Baptist Church, where he was active with the choir and had served as deacon and president of the Sunday School Department. He enjoyed woodworking and was an accomplished author, having written a book of his wartime memories as a pilot, titled, “There I Was…” [Read more…]

Marion “Pete” Burgess Scott

Marion “Pete” B. Scott, 65, passed away May 21.

He was born in South Williamson, Ky., to the late Lloyd D. and surviving Selba Young Scott. He was a graduate from the University of Tennessee in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science and Engineering. He worked for many years at Y-12/UT Battelle, specializing in HVAC mechanical engineering.

Pete enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and karaoke with friends. He was very active with the local Fraternal order of Eagles, Atomic City Aerie 2514, serving as treasurer.

Billie Jean Haddix, “Nana,” 78, of Oak Ridge, passed from this earth to be with our Heavenly Father on May 14, 2014.

She was born February 5, 1936, in Harlan, Kentucky, to the late Bradley and Ida Perciful. She attended Loyall High School, where she was a member of the National Beta Club in 1952 and graduated in 1953.

She graduated from Eastern Kentucky College with a bachelor’s degree in education and soon became a schoolteacher. She married the late William H. Haddix on July 22, 1956.

She attended nursing school in Knoxville and, after graduating, became a LPN. She was a caring nurse for over 55 years.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was loved by many other family and friends and will be greatly missed. [Read more…]

Beulah Bell Brewer Adams, age 79, a resident of Oak Ridge, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at 7 a.m. in her home.

Mrs. Adams was born on August 05, 1934 in Bonnie Blue, Virginia. She lived in Oak Ridge from 1943-1954.

She retired from working doing management of beauty salons and styling of hair. She also worked for years in sales. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and was of the Baptist faith. [Read more…]
