After his son was convicted inside a federal courthouse in Knoxville on drug charges last week, a Lake City man was arrested outside, charged with selling a controlled substance, authorities said.

National Strategic Protective Services LLC, the security contractor for U.S. Department of Energy facilities in Oak Ridge, has a new general manager who will start Oct. 1.
Michael Voce will replace general manager Greg McDowell, whose resignation was announced in July.

Greg Tysor of Atlanta finishes first in a seven-mile stand up paddleboarding race on the Clinch River at Oak Ridge Marina on Sunday. Tysor’s time was 1:13:54.
Racers from Knoxville, Atlanta, Chattanooga, and East Tennessee competed Sunday in the first stand up paddleboarding, or SUP, competition in Oak Ridge.
The new event was called the Secret City SUP Classic, and it featured two afternoon races at the Oak Ridge Marina on Melton Lake Park. One was a two-mile fun race, and the other was a seven-mile elite race.
It’s part of a new human-powered sports initiative in Oak Ridge, said Sam Jones, sales manager for the Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau. That initiative also includes the Neon Vibe 5K—an after-dark, fluorescent glow light fun run—scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, at A.K. Bissell Park. [Read more…]
Judy DiGregorio of Oak Ridge will be one of the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala on Sept. 14 in Kingston.
Local humorist Judy DiGregorio, along with Elizabeth Rose and Bill Landry, will be among the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala sponsored by the Roane County Writers group from 5 to 8 pm Saturday, Sept. 14, at the historic Roane County Courthouse in Kingston.
The fundraiser is for scholarships and the annual Student Writing Contest. The Gala will feature a wine and cheese bar, fire-seared Asian cuisine from WokChow, music by Jeff Nelson and the Sunshine Station Band, and an art exhibition by the Arts Council of Roane County. ORNL Federal Credit Union has announced the leadership transition of Cissi Reagan to the newly created position of assistant vice president of mortgage.
In this new role, Reagan will be primarily responsible for the day to day operations of the overall mortgage department within the credit union’s mortgage lending CUSO–CU Community LLC.

The fight to preserve the history of the K-25 site in west Oak Ridge was long and arduous. Among the challenges were federal funding battles and deteriorated building conditions.
Other people might have considered the dilapidated K-25 Building, once the world’s largest building under one roof, a “useless hulk,” one friend and colleague said. But historic preservationist Bill Wilcox, who died Monday evening, never gave up on his dream of honoring the site’s history.
Now mostly demolished, the mile-long, U-shaped K-25 Building was erected as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project. That was a federal program to build the world’s first atomic bombs during World War II. But the four-story building has been shut down since 1964 and fallen into disrepair, and the U.S. Department of Energy is converting the site into a massive industrial park and demolishing many of the original buildings. Babcock and Wilcox recently announced the winners of the 2013 B&W Scholarship, and one recipient is the daughter of an engineer at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
Sheri Cunningham is a Bearden High School graduate and the daughter of B&W Y-12 engineer Penny Cunningham. She will receive $1,500 per year for up to four years of college-level study. [Read more…]
The Y-12 National Security Complex received awards for its public relations, technical communications, and films during three events earlier this year.
The Volunteer Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America held their annual “V” Awards for public relations programs and products, and Y-12 received six awards, including a first-place honor for The Y-12 Times, the employee newsletter. Other award winners included the Human Performance Improvement/Safety Culture campaign, Innovation poster series, UPFront newsletter, The Y-12 Report, and Y-12 Sustainability communications. The Oak Ridge High School Cross Country teams are having Cross Country Day at The Other One on Tuesday.
A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the cross country teams, and The Other One, a restaurant located in Grove Center, will be open until 8:30 p.m., a press release said. The Other One is at 178 Randolph Road.

Oak Ridge Wildcats Coach Joe Gaddis returned to Blankenship Field on Friday with a 51-14 win over the Clinton Dragons.
The Wildcats, who started and stuck with senior Jaylin Henderson at quarterback this week after trying three quarterbacks last week, are now 1-1.
