Judd Thomas Brown, age 59, of Oak Ridge, passed away at his home on Monday, March 16.

He was born in Oak Ridge on April 20, 1955, to parents Vivian Loftis and Emogene Judd Brown.

Judd was a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, was very active as an amateur radio operator “AB4DC,” enjoyed everything about nature, enjoyed his Boston terriers, and target shooting.

Dorothy Balance Ebel

Dorothy “Dolly” Ballance Ebel, a long time resident of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, at Clarity Pointe of Knoxville, where she resided in the memory care unit.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Ebel, her brother Edwyn Ballance, her sister Mrs. Gwenith Thompson, and grandson Marcus Ebel.

Dorothy was born August 2, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Ellen and Alfred Ballance. She was the eldest daughter in a family of four girls and one boy.

Dolly was born in the baby boom that followed World War I. Her father ran a neighborhood grocery store in south Minneapolis during an era when grocery stores were within walking distance of every house. Shopping for groceries was by pedestrians using wagons and carts, in contrast to the present era where shopping is done by cars and vans at mega stores. She was born in Jellico on April 18, 1923, to parents Newman and Georgia Lockard Bowlin.

Geneva was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church, enjoyed working in her yard, and was very proud of her endeavors. She took pride in letter writing and loved reading. [Read more…]

Joseph Billie Teague

Joseph Billie Teague, age 80, a resident of Coalfield, passed away Friday, March 13, at Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. Teague was born July 20, 1934, in Greene County, Tennessee. He had lived in Coalfield for the past 39 years.

Joe entered into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. Following his U.S. Army discharge, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He had a total of 21 years of military service, and he retired from the U.S. Navy achieving the rank of senior chief. While serving, he received several commendations including medals, ribbons, citations, and badges.

Following his move to Coalfield in 1976, he began employment at ORNL for Martin Marietta as an electrician. He received his second retirement from ORNL in 1996. [Read more…]

Valerie attended Grace Point Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, making crafts, and spending time with her grandkids. Valerie had a sweet spirit and was loved by everyone. She was preceded in death by her mother, Karen Dye.

Valerie is survived by her father, Mark Hutson; husband, Kenneth Nickell; sons, Kevin Nickell and wife Chelsie of Clinton, and Michael Phillips of Welston, Ohio; daughter, April Dillon and husband Allan of Knoxville; and grandchildren, Daemon Nickell, Brianna Dillon, and a grandson on the way. Kyle was a Christian and a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church, and he loved his church family.

Kyle is the son of Richard and Melissa Jackson and brother of Courtney Jackson. Kyle was a lifelong resident of Coalfield. He graduated from Coalfield High School in 2012 and was attending Roane State with plans to attend the University of Tennessee.

Mr. Hall was born July 18, 1961, in Roane County. He was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs.

Before his disability, he was employed as a commercial builder in the construction business. His hobbies included fishing and four-wheeling on Windrock Mountain.

Alice Cecile Rankin vonBuelow passed away in her sleep early Sunday morning, March 8, 2015, at her home in Clinton, Tennessee, at the age of 84.

She was the wife of Carl Werner vonBuelow, with whom she shared four children and seven grandchildren. She was the last surviving of seven children born to French Warder Rankin and Mary Florence Scott.

Born in Springfield, Ohio, on February 10, 1931, she was the youngest of her six siblings: Samuel Harrison, Thomas Scott, Mary Louise, Edward Hayes, Dorothy Emily, and William French. Growing up in Springfield, she attended St Raphael’s parish church and school. [Read more…]
