Cold, powerful magnet will help control hot plasma in fusion reactor

A magnet so powerful it could lift an aircraft carrier six feet into the air was designed in a project managed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It will be used in an international experimental reactor in southern France to produce energy using fusion, the same process used by the sun and other stars to create heat and light. If successful, the reactor could revolutionize energy production, potentially showing how to provide a nearly limitless energy supply without planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions or long-lived radioactive wastes.

Six modules for the reactor’s central superconducting magnet, plus a spare, are being made by General Atomics in Poway, California. Two of the modules have already been shipped to France. Two more are completed, with one of those expected to ship this year. The remaining three are more than 60% complete, and manufacturing should be done this year, said John Smith, General Atomics senior director of engineering and projects.

Discover ORNL research opportunities at Virtual Career Fair

Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent college graduates may find the research opportunity that meets their career goals during the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Science Education and Workforce Development Virtual Career Fair next week.

The Virtual Career Fair will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, February 22. It will be hosted by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a press release said.

“The virtual career fair is a great opportunity for students to investigate research opportunities available at ORNL,” said Bill Cox, ORISE group manager. “Participants will have the same ability to ask questions as if they were at a career fair in person.” [Read more…]

State: Tennessee Mountain Writers workshops to meet in Morristown

Tennessee Mountain Writers has scheduled writing workshops at the “January Jumpstart XV” from January 9-11, 2015, at the Best Western Morristown Conference Center in Morristown, and a high school teacher who lives in Oak Ridge will lead the fiction workshop.

By popular demand, Jane Sasser, the teacher, will be leading the fiction workshop, and Bill Brown returns to lead the poetry workshop, a press release said. The event is sponsored by Tennessee Mountain Writers. It will open with an informal social hour on Friday evening; workshop sessions will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Sasser was born and raised in Fairview, North Carolina. Following in the footsteps of both parents and numerous other relatives and ancestors, she is a lifelong lover of stories and storytelling. Her poetry has appeared in The Atlanta Review, The North American Review, The Sun, The Lullwater Review, Appalachian Heritage, The National Forum, Sow’s Ear, and numerous other anthologies and publications. She has won first place in fiction contests with the Knoxville Writers’ Guild, The Alabama Writers Conclave, and the Green River Writers. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, “Recollecting the Snow” and “Itinerant,” and two novel manuscripts, “Where You Ought to Be” and “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” A high school teacher of English and creative writing, she currently lives in Oak Ridge.
