The director of Anderson County’s alternatives to jail program will be the featured speaker during “Lunch with the League” on Tuesday.
The presentation by Mike Baker will focus on alternatives to incarceration and the benefits to those affected, including their families and the community. The program starts at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

The board of directors of the Medford Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday voted unanimously to display the national motto of “In God We Trust” on its fire station on Lake City Highway.
Chief Mike Cagle recommended displaying the motto, and the decision comes on the heels of last month’s decision by the Anderson County Commission to post the phrase on the Courthouse.

Anderson County investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home on Old Fraterville Hollow Road near Lake City Monday night.
The home’s owner, Kenneth Duncan, had been allowing his sons to stay at the home when the fire broke out Monday night. The two sons—Eddie and Anthony Duncan—along with a woman staying at the house with them had been visiting neighbors when one sibling saw an orange glow coming from the direction of the house.
Anderson County authorities serving a warrant at a mobile home on Becks Lane in Claxton on Monday found an alleged methamphetamine laboratory that included 90 pounds of anhydrous ammonia, 700 coffee filters, two gallons of muriatic acid, and more than a gallon of Coleman fuel, as well as a white substance that tested positive for meth, records said.
Ingredients and equipment that could be used to make meth were scattered around the home, including in a shed near the back of the home, in a 1996 Buick, and under a motor home in the driveway, according to an Anderson County Sheriff’s Department report. Authorities detected the “distinct odor” of anhydrous ammonia at several places near the home, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Jason D. Leach said in the report.

Anderson County Emergency Medical Services recently recognized a Roane State Community College student who provided assistance during a medical emergency.
EMS director Nathan Sweet honored Amber Kennedy of Sunbright during the Anderson County Commission’s Feb. 19 meeting. Kennedy is a waitress at Ruby Tuesday in Oak Ridge.
Last December, a customer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Kennedy—who had taken a safety, first aid, and CPR course at Roane State’s Morgan County campus—stepped forward and administered CPR.
The Knoxville Police Department on Friday arrested a Knoxville man suspected of stealing a school bus in Knox County that was later found in Anderson County.
The suspect, Hillman Greenlee, 61, “sold” the 1998 Blue Ribbon Coach Bus for $1,200 to another person while the owner of the bus was out of town, according to a statement from KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk. The value of the bus is about $2,000.

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett and Rep. John Ragan will be presenting the widow of former Medford Fire Chief Ronnie Braden with a plaque commemorating his service to the community at the Medford Volunteer Fire Department chili supper on Saturday.
The chili supper starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Clinch River Baptist Church at 407 Cane Creek Road.

A Powell man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the shooting of his brother on Johnson Gap Road on Feb. 1, authorities said.
Jamie Lynn Lowe, 30, of Powell, was arrested Tuesday at a home on Mehaffey Road in Claxton on a fugitive from justice warrant for a parole violation in Michigan, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said in a Thursday morning press release. Warrants for the new charges were served at the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton on Wednesday.
Lowe’s brother, Jeffery Allen Lowe, 28, was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with a potentially life-threatening wound after the Feb. 1 shooting at their mother’s home on Johnson Gap Road near Clinton, authorities said.
A school bus reported stolen in Knox County this morning was soon found in Anderson County, authorities said.
Bus 117 appears to have been stolen from its owner’s home on Prosser Road, Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.
Four businesses sold beer to an underage person during a compliance check at 19 local businesses last week, Anderson County Sheriff Paul White said in a Tuesday afternoon press release.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department conducted the compliance checks at local businesses that sell beer on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with help from Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention of Anderson County, or ASAP, a press release said.

Rescue crews located three people reported missing after not returning from an ATV ride uninjured Saturday morning.
Crews from the Anderson and Morgan County rescue squads as well as crews from the Marlow and Briceville volunteer fire departments and others assisted in the search for a grandfather, father, and son who went riding Friday on Windrock Mountain, got lost, and had to camp out in the elements overnight. The trio was located Saturday morning and, aside from one mild case of hypothermia, was safe and sound.
