Y-12 honors companies, advocates for small business success

The Y-12 National Security Complex honored six small businesses last week for “exceptional contributions” to its missions during Fiscal Year 2011.

The businesses were honored at the annual Socioeconomic Programs Awards reception held Thursday, July 12, a B&W Y-12 press release said.

Two Y-12 employees also were acknowledged for their role as small business advocates.

Honored as Y-12 2012 small businesses of the year were:

  • Small Business: SCI Consulting Services Inc.
  • Small Disadvantaged Business: GEM Technologies Inc.
  • Woman-Owned Small Business: G&S Construction Company Inc.
  • HUBZone Small Business: Oldenburg Group Incorporated
  • Veteran-Owned Small Business: Advantage Electronics Inc.
  • Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business: A1 Tactical and Safety

The two Y-12 employees honored as small business advocates of the year were Kealan Huckabee and Floyd Smith.

Application deadline extended for AC circuit court clerk job

Anderson County is still seeking qualified applicants to complete the unexpired term of the Circuit Court Clerk, and the deadline to apply has been extended, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.

The Anderson County Commission agreed Monday to extend the deadline for applications and resumes until Sept. 21., WYSH said.

Commissioners are expected to select the next Circuit Court Clerk during a special-called meeting at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 1.

Anderson County Fair ends Saturday

The Anderson County Fair is in its last two days at the fairgrounds in Clinton, and the gates open at 5 p.m. today.

Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids ages 6 through 12, and free for kids under 6. An armband that will let you ride the rides all night long costs $20.

Channel 95 will feature live election results

Channel 95, Anderson County’s public television station, will have a live broadcast during the Aug. 2 election, providing updates on voting results and interviews with candidates and community leaders.

The station is working with the Anderson County Election Commission to produce the broadcast, which starts at 8 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. Aug. 2.

Teachers want their students to be comfortable with technology at any age, and grants this spring from the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation provided iPads, promethean boards, student response systems, and computers to make that happen.

At Willow Brook Elementary School, the large screen of a new interactive, Web-based “promethean” board in art classes will make artworks come alive for students.

At Linden Elementary School, iPads in a second grade classroom will engage students in collaborative writing activities.

New computers in fifth-grade language arts classrooms at Robertsville Middle School will also encourage young writers in a writing workshop environment.

Federal officials have selected a deputy manager for a new federal office set up to oversee nuclear production missions in Oak Ridge and Amarillo, Texas.

Daniel Hoag has been named deputy manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Production Office, or NPO.

Established in June, that office provides federal oversight of nuclear production missions at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and Pantex Plant in Amarillo.

Government wants to lease space for displaced Federal Building workers

The General Services Administration, which owns the Federal Building in Oak Ridge, wants to lease commercial space for 150 to 175 employees displaced after the Federal Building shut down in June.

About 150 to 175 employees could move into commercial office space while the U.S. General Services Administration removes asbestos-containing insulation from the Federal Building in Oak Ridge.

The GSA posted a notice last week on FedBizOpps.gov that it wants to lease about 30,000 square feet of temporary space in Oak Ridge, potentially for up to six months, with a second six-month term possible. Leasing proposals were due by Tuesday.

Officials said they are moving quickly to find space for employees displaced after a mid-June inspection found asbestos-containing insulation had fallen into heating and cooling ducts at the Federal Building.

Kelly selected as new manager of DOE Oak Ridge Office

Larry Kelly has been named manager of the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge Office.

Kelly has been serving as acting manager since April. He was the third acting manager at the Oak Ridge Office since former manager Gerald Boyd retired in April 2011.

Kelly had previously served as the acting deputy manager and the assistant manager for Environment, Safety and Health.

If it wasn’t already, the race for Roane County property assessor has grown heated.

There are allegations that the incumbent threatened to beat up her challenger and questions about who owns a website address that was once used by the incumbent but now appears to point to unfavorable articles about her.

The two candidates, incumbent Teresa Kirkham and challenger David Morgan, also disagree on whether property assessment values can be lowered more often than every five years.

Sewer lines being tested in Oak Ridge

As the city sewer lines are smoke tested, the crews will start handing out notices of damaged sewer lateral clean-out assemblies. This assembly is where the drainage system exits the building, then turns into the city sewer line.

The clean-out gives access to the private sewer line so that it is able to be cleaned.

Sewer laterals are the responsibility of the property owner and damaged clean-out assemblies can allow unwanted water and/or debris into the sewer system that can cause the sewer system to back up and overflow in private lines, as well as the city’s main sewer lines. Damaged clean-out assemblies are also a violation of the Sewer Use Ordinance.

After they graduated from culinary school in December 2011, sisters Stephanie Criswell and Tiffany Haines decided Oak Ridge needed a store that sold fresh, homemade doughnuts and cakes.

So, three months ago, they opened Emma Lou Bakery and Cafe off South Illinois Avenue, next to the Oak Ridge Bowling Center.

On Wednesday, they celebrated with local officials and residents at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Besides doughnuts and cakes, the bakery sells pastries, quiche, and bread. Light lunches are also available on weekdays.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities has a new compensation and benefits director.

Meghan Millwood, who has been ORAU’s manager of human resources operations, has been promoted to the position, a press release said.

“Throughout Meghan’s more than 10 years here at ORAU, she has capably served in a variety of progressively responsible positions within the human resources office,” said Dan Standley, ORAU vice president of human resources. “We are very pleased to now have her contributing in her new role as a director on the management team.”
