Anderson County school bus rolls on side, three students possibly injured

An Anderson County school bus rolled on its side on Johnson Gap Road on Tuesday morning in the Dutch Valley community, and five students could have minor injuries, officials said.

There were 44 students on Bus No. 20, which transports students to Dutch Valley Elementary School, Clinton Middle School, and Clinton High School, said Jim Woodward, chief financial officer for Anderson County Schools. It crashed at Dutch Valley Road at about 7:50 a.m. [Read more…]

During a visit to the Y-12 National Security Complex on Monday, eighth-graders Miller Sullivan and Tyler Young learned what happens to a banana when it is submerged in liquid nitrogen.

Daryl Smith of Y-12 was one of four engineering, science, and history experts to give nearly 50 Halls Middle School students “a taste of science past and present at Y-12,” a press release said. [Read more…]

The Y-12 National Security Complex was one of several East Tennessee businesses recently recognized for meeting the National Standard of Excellence awarded by Best Workplaces for Commuters, or BWC.

Other businesses included Green Mountain Coffee, Home Federal Bank, Tomato Head, and Knoxville Utilities Board. They were recently recognized by Smart Trips, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, and City of Knoxville Deputy Mayor Eddie Mannis. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Site Specific Advisory Board welcomed two new student representatives at its May meeting. Gracie Hall and Julia Riley will serve on the board through April 2014.

Haslam signs bill to reduce grocery tax

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam on Monday signed legislation that reduces the state sales tax on groceries from 5.25 percent to 5 percent in July.

It was the last step in a two-year effort to cut the state portion of the grocery sales tax to 5 percent, a press release said.

Haslam held a ceremonial bill signing on Monday at Sloan’s Grocery in Vonore in Monroe County. [Read more…]

Denise Kiernan, author of “The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II,” will speak at Lunch with the League on Tuesday.

The program begins at noon Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

“The Girls of Atomic City” is the true story of the young women during World War II who lived and worked in Oak Ridge, one of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities. Through their efforts were crucial to the development of the world’s first atomic bomb, the vast majority of Oak Ridge residents did not know what they were working on until the atomic bomb known as “Little Boy” detonated above Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. Women volunteer at construction site for National Women Build Week

Women Build May 2013

More than 15 women volunteered on a Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County  construction site earlier this month in recognition of National Women Build Week. Now in its sixth year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to help repair or build affordable housing in their local communities.

The volunteers worked to provide weatherization services and exterior repairs to a home owned by a single mother with three children. While new siding was being installed by volunteers, other volunteers worked on landscaping and yard maintenance. [Read more…]

Remote Area Medical volunteer meeting in Clinton today

First Baptist Church of Clinton will be the hosting a second Anderson County Remote Area Medical Expedition Sept. 21 thru Sept. 22 this year.  Their mission is to serve those in need of vision, dental, and medical services.

The Anderson County Remote Area Medical Clinic will be a free medical clinic supported by volunteers and donations. There is an informational meeting this evening for those interested in helping with the two-day event in September. [Read more…]

Boys and Girls Club has annual spring picnic today

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge will have its annual spring picnic from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at 102 South Jefferson Circle.

The all-you-can-eat picnic is $5, and it will include hamburgers and hot dogs and the opportunity to watch some youth baseball, a press release said.

AAUW meeting features dance program, scholarship recipients, new officers

An AAUW luncheon meeting today features a fun program, the introduction of college scholarship recipients, and the induction of new officers, a press release said.

AAUW member Peggy Emmett, who has won many regional and national dance competitions, and her dance partner Sam Gordon will give a program on dance, the release said. They will perform some of the routines that Emmett, with her interest in theater, has created, the release said.

The Roane Alliance on Thursday kicked off a fund drive to keep its Education Matters! initiative—a “Best Practice” program, according to the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce— continuing in the future.

The Education Matters! program funding is being cut as of June 30 of this year.

“The Education Matters! mission is that every child in Roane County gets some post-secondary education—and does well at it,” said Leslie Henderson, president and chief executive officer of The Roane Alliance. “Education Matters! is making remarkable progress towards that goal, but starting at the end of June this year, the program has lost its funding and we need the community’s help.
