The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will host a pancake breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Applebee’s, 1213 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The public is invited to come feast on pancakes in support of the Children’s Museum. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the front desk of the museum, 461 W. Outer Dr., or at the Applebee’s door on Sept. 8. Children’s Museum board members, staff, and members of Knoxville Area Model Railroaders will serve pancakes.

Children of all ages enjoy learning through play indoors and out at the Children’s Museum. Inside the museum, children may explore how children lived in historic Appalachia, wander through a rain forest, delight in a child-sized playhouse, create a puppet play, experience water play in Waterworks, or see model trains travel through miniature landscapes.

Carly Gilbert ADFAC Home

Officials and volunteers celebrate the Thursday opening of an ADFAC home for Oak Ridge resident Carly Gilbert, second from right. From left are ADFAC board president Tom Marshall, Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan, a Tennessee Housing Development Agency representative, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director Thom Mason, and ADFAC Executive Director Annie Cachiero.

She’s been living with her parents in west Oak Ridge, but child care worker Carly Gilbert will soon have a home of her own.

The 25-year-old expects to move into a home on Robertsville Road within about a week. She has a 30-year-mortgage on the home, built with the help of Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties and volunteers from UT-Battelle, which manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

“I’m a little overwhelmed but very happy,” said Gilbert, a teacher for Anderson County Early Head Start in Oliver Springs. “I’ve never owned a home.”

Andre Block, 32, parked his bike with a trailer outside the Kroger grocery on Illinois Avenue. A duct-taped sign on the back of the trailer said, “Lynchburg to St. Louis for my son.” Dressed in biking shorts, a camel pack for water, a helmet, and a gleaming smile, Block laughed easily as he explained the sign.

He hadn’t been on a bike since he was 13 years old, he said, but took up the activity on May 8. The bike he had was in very poor shape, but he started training with a passion. During his training, he flipped his bike and trailer over once and nearly ran over Steve Bartholomew.

“I was going down a steep hill and saw Steve coming up it,” Block said. “That’s when I realized I didn’t have any brakes, so I yelled down ‘On your right!’ I should have said ‘On your left!” but it all worked out. I missed him, and I finally got the bike stopped.”

A seven-year-old Oak Ridge boy was recognized as a “true American hero” on Monday for saving the life of his nine-year-old sister in June.

WYSH Radio in Clinton reported that Damien Longmire of Oak Ridge saw his sister Kailyn floating facedown in a swimming pool at their grandmother’s house on June 24. He immediately jumped into the water, swam to Kailyn, and turned her over, WYSH said. When he realized she was not breathing, he called out for help and held her head out of the water.

Those who protest the drafting of a five-county regional development plan are concerned about losing their property rights.

There has been disagreement in East Tennessee over whether local governments and officials ought to be working on a five-county regional development plan known as PlanET.

A Saturday forum will allow residents to hear from both sides. Two officials helping to develop the plan are scheduled to take part and so are two speakers who plan to discuss the “pitfalls of central planning for sustainability.”

“What we really want is for people who are undecided about it all to come, and listen to the two groups on the panel presenting their views, then taking questions from the general audience,” said Oak Ridge resident Robert Humphries, who provided information on the five-hour forum.
