Reminder: ORHPA celebrates 70th anniversary of end of WWII with special showing of historic movie

Reminder: A 70th anniversary celebration of the end of World War II will feature a special showing of the historic movie “‘The Beginning or the End,’ The Story of the Atomic Bomb and Oak Ridge.”

This movie was Hollywood’s first attempt to tell the fascinating story of the creation of the world’s first atomic bomb in the massive, top-secret Manhattan Project. The movie was originally released in 1947, just two years after the end of the war. It stars Brian Donlevy, Robert Walker, and Tom Drake.

The celebration has been organized by the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association. It’s scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, August 29, at the Historic Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Grove Center.

“We wanted to honor those who perished in WWII, our great veterans, Manhattan Project and Cold War workers, and the world-changing Y-12 plant on this anniversary,” said Mick Wiest, president of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association. “It’s important to remember and be grateful.” [Read more…]

Commerce secretary to tour UT partner IACMI, ORNL manufacturing facility

KNOXVILLE—On Thursday, August 27, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and Department of Energy Assistant Secretary David Danielson will visit the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation in Knoxville.

The visit is part of a two-day tour of the institutes make up the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. Governor Bill Haslam, U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann, Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero, and Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will join Pritzker for portions of the day’s activities.

The group will tour the U.S. Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and National Transportation Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The University of Tennessee in Knoxville is a key strategic partner of IACMI and led the proposal efforts with ORNL.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announced the new institute in January during a visit to East Tennessee. The White House initiative aims to strengthen the global competitiveness of America’s manufacturing sector and the workforce. The NNMI now has six institutes, and three more are being formed. The Budget Committee includes County Executive Ron Woody and County Commissioners Steve Kelley, Bobby Collier, Randy Ellis, and Ron Berry.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will tour the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Knoxville on Thursday. It’s a trip to tour the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.

President Barack Obama created the NNMI to strengthen the global competitiveness of America’s manufacturing sector and our workforce. The NNMI currently has six institutes, and three additional institutions under competition, each of which is focused on the development of a different 21st century technology.

The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation works to develop lower-cost, higher-speed, and more efficient manufacturing and recycling processes for next-generation materials, including advanced polymer composites for vehicles, wind turbines, and compressed gas storage, a press release said. In addition, IACMI’s research, development, and demonstration programs are focused on reducing technical risk and developing a robust supply chain to support a growing advanced composites industry. David A. Vudragovich and Anderson County HealthMarkets have a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday.

Vudragovich recently moved his office to 1970 Oak Ridge Highway, at the intersection of State Route 61 (Oliver Springs Highway) and State Route 95 (Oak Ridge Turnpike) east of Oak Ridge.

The ribbon-cutting is from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, with the ribbon-cutting at 4:15 p.m.

Students to test skills, vie for scholarships in UT Pro2Serve Math Contest

Hundreds of Tennessee high school students will put their mathematics skills to the test and vie for scholarships during this year’s UT Pro2Serve Math Contest, hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Registration opens Tuesday, August 25, for the 17th annual contest. The daylong event pits students—public, private, and home-schooled—from across the state in both individual and team competitions.

The contest, to be held Tuesday, October 27, at the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park downtown, will award $6,000 annual scholarships to UT to the top 10 students in the individual competition. The scholarships are funded by UT and Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek. Other prizes also will be given. [Read more…]

Sewer line inspections using sonar machine continue in Oak Ridge

The Oak Ridge Public Works Department continues to use state-of-the-art technology to perform inspections of the city’s sewer system, a press release said.

This technology employs a sonar machine that emits a repeating series of tones, similar to a musical scale. In open areas, it can be heard over long distances. While harmless, the tones emitted by the machine are low enough in frequency that residents nearby may be able to feel and, in some instances, hear them.

Testing is ongoing, but it will be concentrated to certain areas depending upon weather constraints and other factors during the week of August 24. This includes the area in and around Claremont Road, Clifton Circle, and Chestnut Hill Road. [Read more…]

Sewer rehab continues in August, with manhole repairs starting Monday

Sewer rehabilitation continues in August, and starting Monday, August 24, Portland Utilities will be back in town doing manhole repair, primarily in the Central City Sewer Shed. Portland Utilities will notify residents by knocking on their doors on a case-by-case basis. They will be working for about three weeks, deepening upon the weather, a press release said.

The sewer rehab is being done Morgan Contracting, working under contract for the City of Oak Ridge. They are rehabilitating the city’s sewer collection pipes within city easements in yards and in roadways, the release said.

Residents should have already received letters on colored paper (green for Morgan Contracting) and door hangers providing general information and the applicable contractor’s contact information. [Read more…]

Pie Five Pizza Co. and Aspen Dental are both under construction at a new shopping center on South Illinois Avenue next to the Aldi grocery store.

They’re among a series of new businesses that have located in the past few years along a short stretch of South Illinois Avenue between Rutgers Avenue and Scarboro Road/Lafayette Drive. Others have included Aldi, Aubrey’s Restaurant, Bojangles’, Panera Bread, Ole Ben Franklin Motors, and Weigel’s.

A beer permit for Pie Five Pizza will be considered during a special meeting of the Oak Ridge Beer Permit Board at 5:15 p.m. Monday, August 24, in the Municipal Building Training Room. [Read more…]

The new Hank’s Market grocery store in east Oak Ridge has a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, August 25.

Hank’s Market #45 will be in the space formerly used by the Food Lion grocery store at 691 Emory Valley Road.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony is from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, with the ribbon-cutting at 10:15.

Food Lion confirmed its plans to close its Oak Ridge store in June 2014. The company said it was not renewing its lease on the property.

The spaces where Curves and Briarcliff Realty used to be next to Food Lion have been under renovation also, and in July, Goodwill confirmed that it is moving to Emory Valley Road. [Read more…]

Lung cancer to be discussed at Health Night on the Town

There is no sure way to know if you’re going to get lung cancer, but certain risk factors can make you more likely to get lung cancer than another person. Smoking causes 80 percent of lung cancer deaths; however, other factors can increase your risk and even non-smokers can get the disease.

Learn more about lung cancer during Methodist Medical Center’s Health Night on the Town lecture on Tuesday, August 25, at 7 p.m. in the Ridge Conference Room of the hospital, which is at 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Carlo Martinez, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon on the medical staff of Methodist, will present “Lung Cancer: Risk Factors and Prevention.” [Read more…]
