Anderson County Republicans to elect officers Thursday

The Anderson County Republican Party will elect officers of its Executive Committee on Thursday. The public is invited to attend, a press release said.

Elections will be held for the following positions: chair, vice chair, treasurer, vice treasurer, and secretary, the press release said.

The elections will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday March 21, in Room 313 of the Anderson County Courthouse at 100 North Main Street in Clinton.

ORCSGirls joins attempt to set world record for number of girls coding

Oak Ridge Computer Science Girls, or ORCSGirls, is on a mission to inspire girls in the community to explore the possibilities of technology and computer science. After reaching more than 500 girls in 2017, the organization is ready to do it again, covering topics from Python and virtual reality to information graphics, robots, cyber security, and much more. Oak Ridge Computer Science Girls (ORCSGirls) is joining the TechGirlz code breakers event on March 30 to set the world record for the number of girls coding.

ORCSGirls will be running events on March 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at two locations: Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge and at the Blount County Public Library in Maryville. Both workshops will teach participating middle school girls the basics of website development, a press release said.

During the workshop, girls from around the country will be connected through video chat to set this world record. [Read more…]

It is spring cleaning time in East Tennessee and Keep Anderson County Beautiful is joining with Ecyclers USA and Knighthurst Shredding to help you erase your trace, a press release said.

  • Accepted items include:
    • button batteries and rechargeable batteries;
    • compact fluorescent bulbs;
    • cell phones;
    • eyeglasses;
    • some books;
    • blankets;
    • personal computing equipment (including systems, laptops, peripheral devices, components, and cables);
    • televisions;
    • monitors;
    • home electronics;
    • metals; and
    • paper (to be shredded—up to five standard boxes).
  • Items not accepted include encyclopedias, cookbooks, textbooks, tube fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries, and shoes.

Volunteers are seeking help for a March 30 cleanup of the Historic Emery Road in Oak Ridge.

“The Emery Road is both the best kept secret of Oak Ridge and a national treasure,” a press release said. “Even though the century-and-a-half old Emery Road Rock Pillar Bridge is in the heart of the downtown area, few are aware of this monument to the past, nor that the oldest road in the state passed through the center of our town. This colonial settlement trail should have been formally recognized long ago, just as the Natchez Trace has been. A grassroots group of citizens seek to change this oversight, first by cleaning up the parkland surrounding it, where the invasive underbrush catches all the blowing litter from the surrounding businesses, and then by getting it recognized as a proper heritage park.

UT Arboretum Society presents history of CRESO on March 28

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society will sponsor a talk by the Clinch River Environmental Studies Organization, or CRESO, on Thursday, March 28, at the UT Arboretum Auditorium.

The talk is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. March 28. The UT Arboretum is at 901 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.

TVA to lower level of Melton Hill Reservoir for annual shoreline maintenance

The Tennessee Valley Authority will temporarily lower the water level of Melton Hill Reservoir from Sunday, March 24, through Sunday, April 7, to allow property owners to repair docks, stabilize shoreline, and pick up litter, a press release said.

The reservoir’s water level will be held between 790 and 792 feet above sea level—about two to four feet below its current level—during this period, the press release said. The exact rate of the drawdown will depend on weather conditions and may vary with rainfall amounts. Melton Hill will be returned to its normal winter elevation of 794 feet by April 7.

“As in the past, the drawdown targets and dates are subject to change due to weather constraints,” the press release said. “Recent heavy rains could result in greater than usual debris and erosion in some areas.” [Read more…]

The American Museum of Science and Energy is celebrating 70 years. As part of the celebration, there are three events scheduled next week, on March 19 and March 23, at AMSE and Oak Ridge History Museum.

It’s being called a platinum anniversary celebration of science, ingenuity, and the catalyst of the Atomic Age.

“As an anchor of the community, AMSE is proud to celebrate a city that once only existed a vision,” a press release said. “The footprint of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will forever be etched into history as one of the foundations of the Manhattan Project. Seventy years ago, steps were taken to preserve that vision and recognize how the world was changed by the ‘Secret City.’ The museum tells the story about how and why people learned to split the atom. On March 19, 1949, the city’s gates and the nation’s first atomic energy museum, named the American Museum of Atomic Energy, were opened to the public for the first time. [Read more…]

A man was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on East Tennessee Avenue on Tuesday, authorities said.

The crash was reported at the intersection with California Avenue at about 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 12.

The Oak Ridge police and fire departments responded. Witnesses told first responders that a man lost control of the motorcycle he was riding before it crashed into a parked car on the side of the street, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release. [Read more…]

The Y-12 National Security Complex says it is helping to open doors and close the gender gap in engineering fields.

In February, Y-12 hosted its eighth annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering at the site’s New Hope Center. The one-day event, held in conjunction with Engineers Week, gave young female students an opportunity to discover and explore science, technology, engineering, and math (or STEM) careers alongside Y-12 and Uranium Processing Facility Project scientists and engineers, a press release said.

More than 300 middle- and high-school students from seven area counties attended this year’s event. About 100 engineers, scientists, and other volunteers—most from Y-12, the Uranium Processing Facility Project, and the Oak Ridge chapter of Women in Nuclear—supported the event, which encouraged students to connect their math and science skills to careers in STEM fields, the press release said.
