Cumberland Piano Trio plays at First United Methodist on Sunday, Jan. 18

Cumberland Piano Trio

The Cumberland Piano Trio will play at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 18.

“Oak Ridge Symphony’s own piano trio (violinist Susan Eddlemon, cellist Dan Allcott, and pianist Emi Kagawa) join forces with New York composer Larry Spivack to present an exciting program, including a new work commemorating Oak Ridge’s Spallation Neutron Source,” organizers said. “The program also includes Spivack’s ‘Suite from ‘Puss in Boots’ Ballet and Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major.”

The concert is presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association. See the ORCMA website for more information.

Free family concert Sunday features ‘Peter and the Wolf,’ ‘Spring’

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will present “Peter and the Wolf” and Vivaldi’s “Spring” in a free family concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 25, at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

Children are invited to come early for paper puppet making and instrument making beginning at 2 p.m. at the museum at 461 West Outer Drive. The museum is offering free admission from 1-5 p.m. Sunday to support the concert.

Puppets from the “Peter and the Wolf” story are in the Anna Cebrat Puppet Room at the museum, where children may act out the story in the puppet theater in the week leading up to the concert. [Read more…]

ORICL to show three film classics on Tuesdays

The Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning will present three movie classics to the public on the three remaining Tuesdays of this month. The showings are free.

The movies will be shown at 1 p.m. in the City Room, or A-111, in the Coffey-McNally Building of the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College at 701 Briarcliff Road.

The movies are “Maltese Falcon” on January 13, “Amadeus” on January 20, and “Doctor Zhivago” on January 27. [Read more…]

Free guitar, banjo lessons for seniors 50 and older

Free guitar lessons for senior citizens will resume on Friday, January 9, at 9 a.m. at the Oak Ridge Senior Citizen Center on Emory Valley Road.

All levels of guitar players are welcome, a press release said. Beginner’s lessons start at 9 a.m. and intermediate lessons at 10 a.m. Wendall Cook, who has many years of experience playing and teaching, conducts the lessons. [Read more…]

If you would like to learn more about photography, one of the most cost- and time-efficient ways to do so is to join a camera club and Oak Ridge has a good one!

The Camera Club of Oak Ridge has monthly meetings that alternate between presentations by some of the area most accomplished professional photographers and intra-club competitions with expert judging who teach photography during the process of evaluating the images. The public is welcome to attend an initial meeting for free, and a yearly membership cost is nominal. [Read more…]

Christmastide Choral Festival at Grace Covenant on January 4

The Fifth Annual Community Christmastide Choral Festival will be at the Grace Covenant Church at the Trinity Center on Robertsville Road on Sunday evening, January 4.

It’s been organized by the Rev. Rodney Parrish of Grace Covenant Church of Oak Ridge. Everyone is invited, a press release said.

“The celebration of Christmastide begins at Christmas Eve and ends 12 days later on what is traditionally called Epiphany, hence the 12 days of Christmas,” the press release said. “Many churches during this season will present choral programs of excellence. However, it is difficult for the community to be able to attend them all no matter how much they may want to. The purpose of this festival is to give the community an opportunity to close out the Christmas season with one last service of music while being able to appreciate the offerings of multiple church choirs. Tickets on sale now for first Rocky Top Bluegrass Festival

The City of Rocky Top will present the inaugural Rocky Top Bluegrass Festival in 2015. It’s scheduled for Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, at the George Templin Memorial Athletic Field at 214 Main Street in Rocky Top (formerly Lake City).

On Friday, see Flat Lonesome, Blue Highway, and Junior Sisk and Rambler’s Choice.

Saturday’s lineup includes Flat Lonesome, Blue Moon Rising, Steve Gulley and New Pinnacle, The Box Cars, Lonesome River Band, and Bobby Osborne and Rocky Top Express.

Organizers said tickets are on sale now (just in time for Christmas), and they “will make great stocking stuffers for the bluegrass fan on your list.” Get your tickets at Rocky Top City Hall, Marks Pharmacy in Rocky Top, at WYSH Radio, or buy them online at www.RockyTopBluegrassFestival.com.

Christmas Sing-Along Concert in Oak Ridge on Sunday

The public is invited to attend the Oak Ridge Community Band’s Christmas Sing-Along Concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 14, at the First Baptist Church. This is a free concert, dress is casual, and there will be refreshments at the conclusion of the program, a press release said.

It said the audience will be given Christmas song books and will have the opportunity to sing familiar Christmas carols accompanied by the band.

In addition, the Community Band will perform several holiday tunes including a medley of Christmas carols in “Celebrate Christmas,” “A Christmas Flourish,” “Auld Lang Syne,” and the traditional holiday favorite “Sleigh Ride.” [Read more…]
