The Youth Showcase and Auction on Saturday will benefit the Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County.

It’s the second annual event, and it starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.

“Enjoy live performances by local talented youth, including musicians, singers, dancers, and a magician,” an event flyer said. “Matt Shafer Powell will be our master of ceremonies, and a delicious taco bar and desserts will be provided.” [Read more…]

Free singer-songwriter concert at Grove Theater on April 23

A free acoustic show at the Grove Theater on Thursday, April 23, will feature musicians from Maryland and North Dakota.

The headliner for the singer-songwriter evening will be the Maryland duo Jennifer and Scott Smith, performing as Naked Blue, a press release said.

“Whether as a duo or with full band, their folky pop performances wash an audience with a glow of emotions to relish in for days,” the press release said. “Both accomplished multi-instrumentalists, their music actually relies on strong writing skills and impeccable harmonies. Naked Blue’s trademark acoustic-pop sound in its simplest form is good harmonies, a catchy hook and Jen’s breathy voice that at once soothes and intrigues.” [Read more…]

Steve Rutledge and the Groove Evolution will open for The Marshall Tucker Band at the Secret City Festival on Friday, June 12, and Legacy will open for Three Dog Night on Saturday, June 13.

Steve Rutledge is a guitar virtuoso/vocalist/producer originally from Frankfort, Kentucky, organizers said. He Moved to Nashville in 1997 to pursue a dream of playing music professionally and producing new artists. His music is a mix of rock, rhythm and blues, classic rock, and country.

Organizers said Rutledge has played worldwide and shared the stage and/or opened for artists such as Trace Adkins, Reba, Emerson Drive, and Toby Keith, to name a few. [Read more…]

Graduation Celebration 2014

 

Graduation Celebration—a free, all-night party for high school graduates in Oak Ridge—will host its 18th annual event at the Oak Ridge Civic Center, from 10 p.m. Thursday, May 28, until 5 a.m. Friday, May 29. It is seeking sponsorships and volunteer help with this community-wide effort to keep youth safe on graduation night.

“We are so glad to be able to offer this wonderful event to our graduates,” said Debbie Magill, chairperson of the event. “It shows our youth that the City of Oak Ridge cares about them and is proud of their accomplishments. We could not put on this event without the generous support of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board, and the citizens and businesses of our city.” [Read more…]

Keep Anderson County Beautiful will host the eighth annual Earth Day festival in Oak Ridge on Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at A.K. Bissell Park.

East Tennessee residents living in or around Oak Ridge are invited to participate in the festival, organizers said. It features free activities and events that promote healthy living and environmental education, and that encourage individuals to create and contribute to a sustainable community.

Sponsored in major part by KACB and Leidos, Earth Day will feature outdoor games for children, music, healthy food vendors, exhibitors showcasing educational booths, an on-site scavenger hunt, and neighborhood games such as hopscotch, bocce, croquet, flying discs, ladder ball and a special reduce, reuse, recycle game. “Not Now…I’m Writing” is the theme of the Tennessee Mountain Writers’ 27th Annual Conference, scheduled Thursday through Saturday, April 9-11, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Oak Ridge. The conference includes writing contests, workshops, networking, manuscript evaluations, publishers, editors, book signings, a bookstore, vendors, and more.

Evelyn Coleman will lead the Writing for Young People workshops and will be the keynote speaker at the awards banquet, the concluding event of the conference. Coleman, an Edgar-nominated, award-winning author, writes across genres from picture books to young adult and adult novels. Coleman’s latest books, “Freedom Train” and the American Girl Mysteries Series book, “Cecile’s Cameo Necklace,” have received glowing reviews. Children’s Museum hosts Celebration of Young Child April 17

Ron Anglin delights young and old with his juggling and comedy program, “Quite a Catch.” He will present his juggling feats on Friday, April 17, for the Celebration of the Young Child at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

His show will be at 10 a.m., and the celebration will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the museum, which is at 461 West Outer Drive in Oak Ridge.

Before and after the show, children may create “make and take” crafts with the Florence Crittenton Agency, be “Kids in Motion” with the National Fitness Center, learn about fire safety from the Oak Ridge Fire Department, experience healthy living with a “Balance and Nutrition” program by the Anderson County Health Department, and taste healthy snacks presented Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. A concert at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge on Saturday, April 4, will feature several performers.

Those scheduled to perform include Brandon E., Ronnie Miller, and special guest Erin Ott, 2015 NACMAI Classic Country Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $15 for adults, $7.50 for children 6-12 years old, and free for kids 5 and under.

The Grove Theater is at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge.
