Host families needed for Roane State international students

Hosting an international student is rewarding and fun, said Roane State Community College student exchange coordinator Emma Ellis.

“You get a different perspective, not only of the country the student is from but on the world and sometimes even on yourself,” Ellis said. “Hosting helps you grow as a person, and it’s fun.”

Roane State is seeking families to host international students. As student exchange coordinator, Ellis works directly with host families. She and her family are also hosting a student from Ukraine during the spring semester. [Read more…]

Learn more about high-tech mechatronics at Roane State on Thursday

Anyone interested in Roane State Community College’s new high-tech mechatronics program is invited to information sessions on Thursday, March 21, at the college’s Oak Ridge Campus.

Arte Musica to perform Friday at Roane State

Crossover band Arte Musica will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge.

The concert is free and open to the public. “Visitors can enjoy Arte Musica’s blend of classical, jazz, blues, and rock in the campus’s refurbished City Room, which features new seating,” a press release said.

“Crossover is an interesting style combination,” said pianist and Roane State adjunct professor Rudolph Nemeth. “It blends different genres and different instruments in new and exciting ways.”

Jefferson Middle School 4-H GIS Club visits Roane State

Jefferson Middle School and Roane State Community College are working together to help students learn about geographic information systems, or GIS.

Jefferson Middle School has a 4-H GIS Club, and Pat Wurth, Roane State associate professor of geographic information systems and geography, is mentoring the students. The middle schoolers visit campus and are working on a project to map bluebird houses thanks to a grant from software company ESRI.

Roane State student recognized for helping during medical emergency

Anderson County Emergency Medical Services recently recognized a Roane State Community College student who provided assistance during a medical emergency.

EMS director Nathan Sweet honored Amber Kennedy of Sunbright during the Anderson County Commission’s Feb. 19 meeting. Kennedy is a waitress at Ruby Tuesday in Oak Ridge.

Last December, a customer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Kennedy—who had taken a safety, first aid, and CPR course at Roane State’s Morgan County campus—stepped forward and administered CPR.

Several area students made the dean’s list at Roane State Community College for the fall 2012 semester.

To be eligible, a student must attain at least a 3.5 grade-point average while attempting 12 or more semester hours of college-level courses.

One of ‘Lost Boys of Sudan’ speaks at Roane State on Wednesday

Mathiang Gutnyin, one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan,” will speak at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus on Wednesday.

Presented by Roane State’s Office of International Education, the event starts at 6 p.m. in the City Room and is free and open to the public. The campus is located at 701 Briarcliff Ave. in Oak Ridge.

The phrase “Lost Boys of Sudan” describes thousands of children, mostly boys between ages 7 and 17, separated from their families and forced to live in refugee camps during the Second Sudanese Civil War from 1983-2005. Approximately 3,800 “Lost Boys,” a description coined by aid workers in Africa, were allowed to settle in the United States in 2001.

Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus will host the 13th annual “Love Your Library” used book sale Feb. 19-20 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Available items will include paperbacks, textbooks, cookbooks, children’s books and more. Items will be on sale in the atrium in front of the library. Prices will range from $1.50 to $3.

Wear pink, get in free at Roane State basketball games on Feb. 16

Fans who wear pink to Roane State Community College basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 16, will be admitted free and will be supporting a nationwide effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The Roane State women play Cleveland State at 5 p.m. in the gym on the college’s main campus in Harriman. The men’s game follows at 7 p.m.

Tom Stufano has been named chief of police for Roane State Community College.

Stufano has more than 30 years in law enforcement, emergency management, and crisis management planning. Most recently, he served for more than six years as the chief of staff/deputy federal coordinating officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the Southeast region.
