ORHPA has Museum Appreciation Day at AMSE today

The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association is having a Museum Appreciation Day for the American Museum of Science and Energy on Thursday, May 11.

The Museum Appreciation Day is is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at AMSE, which is at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge.

The Museum Appreciation Day is being held in place of the ORHPA’s regular monthly meeting normally, which is in the evening on the second Thursday of each month.

“The ORHPA encourages all its members and the public to come out and thank the AMSE staff for decades of excellent work, creating a museum that is a top destination for visitors to Oak Ridge,” a press release said. “While visiting, you’ll have a chance to give comments on what the AMSE means to you.” [Read more…]

Dr. Monica Crane will discuss Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday at Courtyards Senior Living

Dr. Monica Crane, a fellowship-trained geriatric medicine physician with special expertise in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, will discuss “How to Fight Alzheimer’s Disease” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at The Courtyards Senior Living.

The public is invited to meet Dr. Crane, the new medical director for The Courtyards, and to attend the talk at the senior living facility at 300 Briarcliff Avenue in Oak Ridge, a press release said.

On April 1, Dr. Crane became medical director for The Courtyards Senior Living, which operates assisted living and dedicated memory care facilities in Oak Ridge, Knoxville, and Johnson City. She will present informative talks on aging at The Courtyards on a regular basis, the press release said.

She is also the medical director and founder of Genesis Neuroscience Clinic in Knoxville, which opened in April. The clinic, at 1400 Dowell Springs Boulevard, provides comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and clinical trial opportunities for those with cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative dementias, the release said. MORE2 provides much-needed home energy improvements to Oak Ridge home

Oak Ridge resident Peggy Brummett is just one of many happy participants in the MORE2 Program offered in our community and she urges others to apply.

“I would highly recommend this to anyone!” Brummett said in a recent interview. “I don’t understand why there aren’t a whole lot more Oak Ridgers applying. It’s made a huge difference in our home.”

Brummett applied for the MORE2 program, hoping it would help with her utility bills and, more importantly, with her peace of mind.

“I can now sleep better knowing I can rely on our heat or air conditioning and knowing it won’t cost us so much in the future,” Brummett said. “And as a bonus, there is less dust in our house.”

She suspected her old heating, ventilation, and air conditioner (HVAC) wasn’t working effectively, and her utility bills were proof she was correct. Her home was losing a great deal of costly energy due to air leakage, inadequate insulation, and the poorly working HVAC unit.

At no cost, the MORE2 Program provided a new HVAC unit, new insulated ductwork, and performed air sealing throughout the home. Brummett is recently retired from a large retail establishment in Oak Ridge, where she worked in customer service. Having worked in customer service, she knows good service when she sees it and commented on the program. [Read more…]

CodeRED alert helps to locate missing child

Anderson County authorities said a CodeRED alert helped locate a missing child on Friday. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department explains in the press release below.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to a home on Hinds Creek Road on Friday, May 5, shortly before 11 a.m. on a report of a missing child. A four-year-old boy had wandered away from home, apparently with the family dog. An intensive search began using Sheriff’s K-9 teams including bloodhounds, law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s Department and other local police agencies, and emergency personnel from several area fire and rescue agencies.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Communications sent a CodeRED alert to residents living in the area to inform them of the missing child. This alert went to all landline telephones within a five-mile radius of where the child went missing. It also would have been sent to anyone who lived in that area and had signed up for CodeRED for their wireless telephone or text messages. [Read more…]

ORNL’s Gibson named SME outstanding young engineer

Brian T. Gibson, a postdoctoral research associate at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been named one of the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers for 2017.

Gibson has doctorate and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the West Virginia University Institute of Technology, a press release said. He works in the Materials Processing and Joining group in the Materials Science and Technology Division at ORNL.

Before joining ORNL, Gibson studied as a Tennessee Space Grant fellow in the Vanderbilt University Welding Automation Laboratory. His research focuses on technical challenges at the intersection of robotics and materials processing, with specific research interests that include solid-state joining, additive manufacturing, in-process quality monitoring, robotic force control, and signal processing, the press release said.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for DOE’s Office of Science. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time, the press release said. deBeauclair named deputy manager at DOE Oak Ridge Office

Geoffrey “Geoff” G. deBeauclair has been named deputy manager of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office/Integrated Support Center. The appointment was effective May 1, a press release said.

It’s one of DOE’s most diverse field locations, the press release said. As deputy manager, deBeauclair will help Oak Ridge Office Manager Ken Tarcza manage the Oak Ridge Integrated Support Center. That center provides critical mission support services locally and nationally in the areas of personnel, finance, budget, procurement, legal, security and emergency management, and employee health and safety, the press release said.

“He will also be responsible for advancing ORO’s responsibilities for management of the 32,000-acre Oak Ridge Reservation, which will include addressing cross-cutting issues and among major activities, including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, East Tennessee Technology Park, and Y-12,” the press release said. State budget includes $100,000 for Green McAdoo Cultural Center in Clinton

The recently passed Tennessee budget includes $100,000 for the maintenance, restoration, and operation of the Green McAdoo Cultural Center in Clinton, a press release said.

The funds were secured in the budget by Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally and Representative John Ragan, both Oak Ridge Republicans, the press release said.

The Green McAdoo Cultural Center commemorates the Clinton 12, the first black students to integrate a public high school in the South, the release said.

“The story of the Clinton 12 is a pivotal event in the history of our state and our region that must never be forgotten,” Ragan said in the press release. “The Green McAdoo Cultural Center serves an important function in our community to remind us of this important history. The Ulster Project season is upon us. To those who have never been involved, these are just words. But to our board of dedicated volunteers, to the former host families, and to the teens of the past, hopefully this statement brings forth positive memories and an underlying sense of the shift that occurred in their life as a result of their experience with the Project.

It’s not often that you can pinpoint the moment your life changed for the better. But I can. It happens every year when a group of teens, young and unknowingly naive, gather for the first time as a group that makes up the Ulster Project of (fill in the year). They come with their own ideas about the way the world works and their place in it. But when they leave, they have a better understanding of who they are, how they are connected—separated by miles and plane rides and oceans but together in their sense of unity and purpose.

Every year at the start of the Project, before our friends arrive from Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, I am asked to write a letter to inspire and encourage them before they embark on this trip that will no doubt in some way impact their life. Each year, I feel that my words fail to express how much they will be changed by this experience. The Project month is packed full of fun, laughter, memories, and new friendships. [Read more…]

Climate scientist, evangelical Christian to give talk in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, May 16

Katharine Hayhoe, a nationally-recognized climate scientist and evangelical Christian, will give a talk in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, May 16, a press release said.

The free talk is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge and the Climate Change Science Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Seats are limited.

Hayhoe’s presentation is titled “Climate for Change.” It’s scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at the Pollard Technology Conference Center at 210 Badger Avenue in Oak Ridge.

Hayhoe is both a distinguished climate scientist and an evangelical Christian, the press release said. An atmospheric scientist, her research focuses on developing and applying high-resolution climate projections to understand what climate change means for society.

Hayhoe has been named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people and one of Foreign Policy’s 100 leading global thinkers, and she was recently named one of Fortune’s world’s greatest leaders, the press release said. She is a professor in the Department of Political Science and Director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. Tennis: Four Wildcats to compete in district tournament finals today

Four Oak Ridge Wildcats will compete in the finals of the district tennis tournament starting at 4 p.m. in Knoxville today (Tuesday, May 9).

The finals are at Tyson Park in Knoxville, near the University of Tennessee campus and the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Alcoa Highway.

The semifinals were Monday. Pictured in the photo at left with scores from Monday’s matches are, from left to right, Jimin Lee 6-4, 7-6(5) verus Kaleigh Basilio (Halls); Archer Marlow 7-5, 6-2 versus Harrison Campbell (Halls); and Andrew and Ethan Brady 6-1, 7-6(4) versus Hollingsworth/Plyler (Halls).
