Luther M. “Ken” Carroll, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, at his home.
Mr. Carroll was born June 19, 1923, in Anderson County. He lived in the New River Community before moving to Oliver Springs in 1953.
He was a member of the Red Oak Baptist Church and a members of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Carroll was a retired coal miner who worked in the area coal mines until his retirement. Following his coal mining career, he worked in Oak Ridge at The Oak Ridger.
Harriet Clayton Davis
Harriet Clayton Davis, age 82, of Oak Ridge, went to her Heavenly Home on Jan. 14.
Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Person County, N.C., to the late Daniel A. and Caroline Swanson Clayton.
As well as being a homemaker, Mrs. Davis worked in child care. She especially enjoyed working at Daniel Arthur with special needs children.
She had an intense love and concern for animals. She fed birds, squirrels, and raccoons. She never hesitated to help an animal in need, and had several dogs and cats over the years as pets. She will be missed by her pets Blackie, Baby, and Lady.

An Oak Ridge woman suffered possible injuries in a rollover accident on South Lansing Road on Sunday night.
Terry Beth Matthews, 48, was using her shoulder and lap belt and was not ejected, but she was taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center after her 2004 Toyota Camry rolled near Latimer Road at about 8:55 p.m. Sunday, an Oak Ridge Police Department crash report said.
Matthews was outside the vehicle, which was on its roof, when police and fire units arrived. Her passenger, Richard L. Sweeden, 48, of Kingston, was not injured, but he had left the scene.
Oak Ridge High School football coach Scott Blade has resigned and is moving back to Middle Tennessee, where he will coach at Independence High School south of Nashville.
Blade has coached the Oak Ridge Wildcats since 2009, compiling a 35-15 record. He resigned Thursday, ORHS Athletic Director Mike Mullins said.
Mullins said Blade’s parents live in Franklin in Middle Tennessee, and Blade came to Oak Ridge from Hillsboro High School in Nashville. In addition, his wife received a job promotion in the medical field, and Independence quickly hired Blade.
“It was a job opportunity that he just couldn’t turn down,” Mullins said.
The Babcock and Wilcox Company, part of B&W Y-12, is protesting a federal decision to award a consolidated contract to Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC to manage the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas.
An unsuccessful bidding team led by The Babcock and Wilcox Company is protesting the recent federal decision to award a contract to Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC to manage and operate the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas.
The National Nuclear Security Administration announced on Jan. 8 that the consolidated contract had been awarded to Consolidated Nuclear Security, or CNS. That team includes Bechtel National Inc. and Lockheed Martin Services Inc.
The B&W-led team is called Nuclear Production Partners LLC, or NP2.
Anderson County, Clinton, and Roane County have announced that their schools will be closed Friday due to the weather.
Anderson County said its central office staff will follow established procedures for bad weather, and Roane County Schools said its central office will be closed because of the weather conditions.
Lupe Ruiz
Lupe Ruiz, age 80, of Lake City, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She dearly loved her grandchildren and being with her family. Lupe also enjoyed working outside with flowers. Lupe was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church of Clinton.
Mary Ruth Prater Holder, age 74, a resident of Powell, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Park West Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mrs. Holder was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Roane County. She moved to Powell in 1969.
Mary Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church in Lake City.
She retired from Allied Chemical as a seamstress following 17 years of employment.
Katherine J. Barton, pioneer and long-time resident of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Jan. 11, in Birmingham, Ala., her home of the past seven years.
She was 92 years old.
A grocery story and commercial store are being considered at two small sites on South Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike.
The unnamed grocery store could be built on a 2.3-acre parcel at the new Woodland Town Center, where Aubrey’s and Panera Bread recently opened. The store would be across from the two restaurants, on the other side of a new roadway called Woodland Terrace East.
The Joe L. Evins Federal Building in Oak Ridge, one of the U.S. Department of Energy sites to be guarded under a $182 million protective force services contract announced Thursday.
Federal officials announced Thursday that they have awarded a $182 million contract to protect U.S. Department of Energy sites in Oak Ridge, including the East Tennessee Technology Park, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Joe L. Evins Federal Building, and the rest of the Oak Ridge Reservation, not including the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The five-year contract was awarded to National Strategic Protective Services LLC, or NSPS.
“We are pleased to welcome NSPS as a part of the Department of Energy team in Oak Ridge,” said Larry Kelly, Oak Ridge Office manager. “We evaluated the proposals and it was clear to us that NSPS is the right company for this difficult and important job.”
NSPS will replace WSI Oak Ridge, which has provided protective force services in Oak Ridge since 2000.

The Clinton city schools may have been closed today but when they do re-open, students and staff will be protected by uniformed police officers.
In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting in December that left 20 elementary school students and six adults dead, school and city officials tried to find ways to protect children close to home.
The city and the school system are splitting the $50,000 cost for the officers through the end of the semester and will look for funding options when the budget process begins later this year to keep the officers there all the time.
