Harold Russell Standefer

Harold Russell Standefer, age 79, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, at his home.

He was born June 27, 1933, in Jonesboro, Ark., the son of Clarence Raymond Standefer and Berdie Mae Dalton Standefer.

Mr. Standefer retired from Lockheed Martin, where he was an architectural engineer.

He was a longtime member of Highland View Church of Christ and was always active in church activities. He enjoyed his church family, playing golf and stamp collecting, and he was an avid reader and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed going to the Methodist Medical Center Cardiac Rehab Center. [Read more…]

Ronald David Braden, age 71, a resident of the Frost Bottom Community in Anderson County, passed away Sunday, March 3, at his home.

Mr. Braden was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Anderson County. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Before his retirement, David was a self-employed master mechanic, and he owned and operated Braden’s Automotive Repair. His hobbies included fishing and going to flea markets.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving, he received several medals, badges, citations, and ribbons. [Read more…]

Norma Faye Amos, 73, of Oak Ridge, passed away at her home on March 1.

She was born on May 17, 1939, in Armathwaite, Tenn., to parents Sylvester J. Jones and Dessie Bridges Jones.

Norma was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had retired after 33 years with the U.S. Department of Energy as a document processor.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, and geneology.

David Ryan Shirley, age 50, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, Feb. 22, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born March 30, 1962, in Oak Ridge, graduated from Oak Ridge High School, and attended East Tennessee State University. David most recently had worked for Noble Metals in Oak Ridge. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent considerable time in the Smokies. [Read more…]

Hubert M. “Mutt” Russell, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, at his home.

Mr. Russell was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Oliver Springs, where he has continued to live for most of his life.

He served his country in the United States Army/Air Force during World War II. While serving, he was stationed in North Africa, and he received several medals, ribbons, accommodations, and citations. [Read more…]

Daisy Lee Nichols, age 80, of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, at her home.

She was born Jan. 25, 1933, in Oliver Springs, the daughter of Wiley and Mattie Fletcher Johnson.

Mrs. Nichols was the owner and operator of Daisy’s Hair Salon. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #390. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, bird watching, working puzzles, and playing cards. Up until their health began to fail, she and her husband, William L. Nichols, were Snow Birds and spent their winters at the Rock Creek Campground in Naples, Fla. Her husband passed away on March 17, 2012. [Read more…]

Rutherford B. Simpson, age 81, of Clinton, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, at Methodist Medical Center.

He was born April 4, 1931, in Hazard, Ky., the son of William and Rowena Roberts Simpson.

Mr. Simpson was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a CPA and owner of Simpson Accounting in Oak Ridge. He was also a resident of Pensacola, Fla., where he enjoyed his passion of deep-sea fishing. [Read more…]

Norman Milton Gailar

Norman Milton Gailar, Ph.D., 95, passed away on Feb. 23 at the Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center.

He was born in Alfred, N.Y., the middle child of three. Norman had a sister, Silvia (deceased), and a brother, Owen, all of whom were physicists.

Norman attended Syracuse University, where he received a B.S. degree in physics. He was elected into Phi Bata Kappa and was the salutatorian of his graduating class. He went on to earn an M.S. degree in physics from Syracuse and was later drafted into the U.S. Air Force during World War II and served as a navigator. [Read more…]

Betty Jean Phillips, age 64, a resident of Clinton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 25, at her home, while surrounded by her family.

Betty was born Dec. 29, 1948, in the New River Community of Anderson County. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Rock Hill Baptist Church. Betty Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to all. She enjoyed, vegetable gardening and canning, flower gardening, reading, watching television, and watching University of Tennessee football. [Read more…]
