Social justice and the sociology of incarceration will be discussed at Lunch with the League on Tuesday. The speaker will be Michelle Brown of the University of Tennessee Department of Sociology.
The meeting will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Brown received her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University and joined the faculty at UT in 2011, a press release said.
“Currently, she studies and advocates for anti-prison and racial justice movements in carceral regimes,” the press release said. “She is particularly interested in the use of rights claims and visual tactics in community and national organizing.”
Brown is the author of “The Culture of Punishment: Prison, Society, & Spectacle” (NYUP, 2009) and co-author of “Criminology Goes to the Movies” (NYUP, 2011), the press release said. She is co-editor of the forthcoming “Routledge International Handbook of Visual Criminology” (2017) and “Media Representations of September 11” (Praeger, 2003).
Lunch with the League is a public program open to the community. Membership in the League of Women Voters is not required, and there is no cost to attend, the press release said.
The presentation will begin at noon Tuesday. Lunches are provided by the Soup Kitchen and are available at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come basis for $8, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, a nonpartisan political organization for men and women, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy, the press release said.
