An Oak Ridge man was charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly threatened officers with a shovel on Friday, August 18.
William A. Rauhuff, 62, has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of resisting arrest.
Police had responded to a report of a possible suicide attempt on Marion Road at about 5:17 p.m. August 18, according to affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge Police Department Officer Sherrill Selby was the first to arrive. Speaking through the front door of the home, Rauhuff told Selby that he was going to take her gun from her and shoot her, the affidavits said.
ORPD Officer Gary Beaty arrived shortly after that.
Rauhuff opened the front door armed with a metal shovel clinched in his right hand, according to the affidavits, which were filed by ORPD Officer Jason Robbins. Rauhuff entered the home and then exited again still armed with the shovel, Robbins said in the affidavits.
“The defendant stated, ‘If you are going to pull your weapons, let’s see if you’ll use them,'” the affidavits said.
“The defendant then stepped down out of the doorway and approached both officers Selby and Beaty with the shovel raised above his head, threatening both officers,” the affidavits said. “The defendant was able to be calmed down, and he sat down on the front steps leading to the front door.”
ORPD Officer Kyle Scott approached Rauhuff from behind and was able to grab both of his arms in an attempt to detain him, the affidavits said.
“The defendant then actively resisted and tried to pull both arms away,” the affidavits said.
Rauhuff was taken into custody and escorted to the nearest patrol car.
While he was being taken to the patrol car, he kicked ORPD Sergeant Jeremy Huddleston, and he was then secured in the back of Selby’s patrol car, according to the affidavits.
Rauhuff was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for a mental evaluation, the affidavits said. The results of that evaluation are not clear.
Rauhuff was arrested September 1. He was released on September 2. His bond has been set at $107,500.
The aggravated assault charges are for the alleged assaults on Beaty, Huddleston, and Selby.
