The City of Oak Ridge will host a fourth public forum-style meeting on the Oak Ridge Preschool on July 11. It’s the last step in the conceptual design process, a press release said.

“Once plans are affirmed by the community, architects will begin work on construction drawings,” the press release said.

The preschool will be built in Scarboro Park in central Oak Ridge.

The July 11 meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Scarboro Community Center.

Three meetings have been held so far this year at Scarboro Community Center to discuss plans for the new preschool, on March 23, April 20, and May 25.

“Members of the community who attended those meetings were able to see preliminary concepts, ask questions, and provide input on decisions,” the press release said.

Oak Ridge City Council selected Scarboro Park as the location for a new preschool on March 27. The City of Oak Ridge and Oak Ridge Schools had been working to choose a site for about two years.

Building a new preschool has been under discussion even longer, since at least the mid-1980s.

Once the new building is complete, the preschool will relocate from the school administration building on New York Avenue. Scarboro Park, the site ultimately selected by City Council and the Board of Education, is across the street from the Scarboro Community Center on Carver Avenue.

Members of City Council and the Oak Ridge Board of Education will be present at the community meeting on July 11, along with city staff members and representatives from Studio Four Design, the architectural firm selected for the project. Citizens will be able to ask questions and are encouraged to provide suggestions about what they’d like to see with regards to the preschool project and its impact, the press release said.

This will also be the perfect site for the new SAB.

Interesting. I’ve not heard anyone talking about moving the SAB, and I don’t know the current plans, if any, for that building. I guess the plan is to keep the SAB where it is now. Given what’s been said about the maintenance needs of that building, it seems like the school system will have to do something at some point in the future, but I haven’t heard anything specific. Based on what I’ve heard, I think the building requirements for a preschool are a bit more stringent than the building requirements for school administration offices. But I could be wrong on that. I’ll try to check on this when I have a chance.
