Oak Ridge City Council member Anne Garcia Garland will discuss local economic development during a Monday evening meeting of the local branch of the American Association of University Women.
Garcia Garland’s talk is titled “Vision and Economic Development: What is Going on in the City.†It starts at 7 p.m. in the Social Room of the Unitarian Universalist Church.
It’s the first meeting of the year for the Oak Ridge branch of the AAUW. A potluck dinner provided by AAUW members will be served at no charge starting at 6 p.m., and the public is invited to attend, a press release said.
In addition to her work on the City Council, Garcia Garland is a member of AAUW and the League of Women Voters, and she serves on the board of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, the press release said. She and her husband T.J. Garland retired two years ago from Noble Metals Inc., a metal recycling company that they established.
The press release said the AAUW is a national organization that “advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.” It has 1,000 branches across the country and awards fellowships and grants to women pursuing higher education.
The Oak Ridge Branch offers scholarships each year to students at Roane State Community College. It holds monthly general meetings, which are open to the public, from September through May, except for November and December.
In December, there is a tea to benefit its scholarship programs.
New officers for the AAUW Oak Ridge Branch this year are Karen Fuhrman, president; Fay Martin, vice president for membership; Mary Uziel, treasurer; and Connie Battle, secretary.
