Roane State English professor DeAnna Stephens will introduce a free screening of “Psycho,” regarded as Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece of a psychological thriller, at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Princess Theatre in Harriman.
The R-rated film, often described as “creepy,” is the tale of a woman on the lam who checks into the mysterious Bates Motel, apparently vacant except for proprietors Norman Bates and his mother.
The 1960 movie, now considered a classic, gives audiences a whole new perspective on taking showers and became Hitchcock’s biggest hit.
Stephens in her introduction will explore the psychological contexts of the film’s main characters. The screening is open to all Roane State students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL) and the public.
Since the screening is in the Halloween season, audience members are encouraged to wear costumes.
Stephens’ English courses are taught primarily in Cumberland County, and she lives in Crossville. She grew up in Fentress County and attended Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where she earned a master of fine arts in creative writing.
When not engaged in teaching—her first love—Stephens says she enjoys writing, literary and film analysis, and “all things macabre.”
