The Rotary Club of Oak Ridge is hosting a Golf Classic tournament on Friday, September 23, to raise money to build a community garden in the Scarboro community in Oak Ridge.

The Rotary Golf Classic will have a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, at the Centennial Golf Course off Edgemoor Road.

Here’s the rest of the schedule:

  • Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
  • A putting contest will be held at 12:30 p.m.
  • Awards will be announced at 6 p.m.

Any individual golfer can play in the tournament for $80, $45 of which is tax deductible. The sponsorship cost for a foursome, who will participate in a four-person scramble starting at 1:30 p.m., is $300, $160 of which is tax deductible.

The funds raised will support the establishment of a community garden in the Scarboro community, a press release said. The fenced-in garden will have a manager. Some of the organic vegetables raised will be donated to food banks. Participants desiring to plant and harvest garden plots must agree to rules and conditions specified in a contract.

University of Tennessee experts will teach participants how to garden and prepare and can healthy foods, helping them lose weight and lower blood pressure.

For information on the golf tournament and other sponsorship opportunities, contact Don Tillar, golf course manager, at dtillar@centennialgc.com or (865) 483-2291. Please make all checks payable to the Oak Ridge Community Fund.
