The Clinton Dragons outlasted the Campbell County Cougars 61-56 in three overtimes Wednesday night to survive and advance in the District 3-AAA basketball tournament at Anderson County High School.
Dragon sophomore Daraon Jones scored a career-high 32 points, including seven in the third extra session, as Clinton secured a spot in the second round and set up a showdown with Karns at 7 p.m. Friday. A win will send the Dragons into a Saturday semifinal against Central at 6 p.m., and it will also secure them a spot in next week’s Region 2 tournament.
Elijah Phillips scored all 14 of his points in the second half to lead the Cougars, who led by as many as nine points in the second half before the Dragons closed the gap and ultimately sent the game into overtime.
Clinton had opportunities to win the game at the end of regulation and in the first two overtime sessions, but buzzer-beating shots rimmed out each time. The Cougars managed to take a pair of one-point leads in the third overtime, but each time, Jones would answer with big basket after big basket, including a three-pointer that proved to be the go-ahead bucket.
Clinton improved to 16-12 on the season, while Campbell County ended its year at 14-15.
In the other game Wednesday at Anderson County, the Karns girls won their first district tournament game since 2008 as they held off Gibbs 52-44 and earned a shot at third-seeded Powell at 6 p.m. Friday at ACHS.
On Thursday, Anderson County will have a decidedly Maverick Blue feel to it as the Lady Mavericks tangle with Halls at 6 p.m. for a berth in the semifinals and next week’s Region 2 tournament, followed at 7:30 by the Mavericks taking on Powell for a semifinal berth.
The Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats play a semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and the Oak Ridge Wildcats play a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Elsewhere tonight (Thursday, February 18), the District 4-AA tournament gets underway at Kingston. At 6 p.m., the Catholic girls face Scott County, followed at 7:30 by the Kingston boys against Scott County.
The District 3-A girls tourney gets started with these games played at the higher seed at 7 p.m.: Greenback at Meigs County; Tellico Plains at Rockwood; Concord Christian at Harriman; and Midway at Grace Christian.
The District 4-A boys tournament starts this eveing as well with these games also played at the higher seed: Oliver Springs hosts Jellico; Coalfield is home for Oneida; and Wartburg plays host to Sunbright.
