Oak Ridge scored on five turnovers by Webb in a 62-6 blowout win at Blankenship Field on Friday night. Junior wide receiver Tee Higgins scored three of the nine touchdowns for the Wildcats, all in the second quarter.
Webb fumbled four times in the second quarter on four consecutive possessions. Oak Ridge converted all four Webb turnovers, which were in Spartans territory, into scores. The Wildcats had a fifth touchdown after a turnover, an interception, in the third quarter.
Six different Wildcats scored touchdowns on Friday. Besides Higgins, they were senior quarterback Jordan Dunbar, senior running back Gavin Warrington, freshman running back Jordan Graham, sophomore running back Adarius Simpson, and sophomore quarterback Johnny Stewart.
Oak Ridge (8-1, 3-1 Region 3-5A) dominated in total yardage, picking up 480 yards to Webb’s 197. The Wildcats had 403 yards rushing, compared to 167 for Webb (4-4, 2-1 Class A, East and Middle).
“It was just a good all-around effort,” Oak Ridge Coach Joe Gaddis said.
In addition to his three touchdown catches, Higgins also had two long punt returns. He led receivers with 77 yards on five catches and the three touchdowns.
Stewart led all runners with 134 yards on two carries.
The Wildcats scored first on a 17-yard touchdown run up the middle by Dunbar at 4:44 in the first quarter. They scored again on a 31-yard pass play from Dunbar to Higgins near the left sideline in the second quarter. Higgins angled through the middle of the field through Webb defenders and into the end zone with 7:55 remaining in the half, giving Oak Ridge a 14-0 lead.
Then, Webb started fumbling. Junior linebacker Kyndall Clark recovered the first one for Oak Ridge at the Webb 19, and Warrington scored on a one-yard run a few plays later, making it 21-0. Simpson recovered the second at the Webb 31, and senior quarterback Logan Fadnek threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Higgins in the left side of the end zone a few plays later, giving the Wildcats a 28-0 lead at 4:45 in the second quarter.
Webb, which won its third straight state football title last year, fumbled on its next play, and Oak Ridge recovered again at the Spartans 20. This time, Graham ran it in from six yards out, increasing the lead to 35-0.
Webb fumbled again three plays later, and Clark recovered it again. Four plays later, Fadnek hit Higgins with a 10-yard pass in double coverage in the middle of the field near the goal line, and Higgins dove forward into the end zone. The Wildcats led 41-0 after a missed extra point with 38.5 seconds left in the half.
Simpson scored on a four-yard TD run during the first possession of the second half for the Wildcats.
Junior defensive back Mark Kaczocha intercepted Webb sophomore quarterback Hunter Green on the Spartans’ next drive, and Stewart scored on the first play from the Oak Ridge 9. He ran 91 yards down the right sideline for the touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 55-0 lead with 1:15 left in the third quarter.
Webb scored its only touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Green to senior tight end Andrew Craig at 7:49 in the fourth quarter. The Spartans missed the extra point.
Stewart answered with another touchdown, this time running 43 yards down the left sideline for the final score to make it 62-6 with 3:53 remaining.
Jaycen McGhee also had an interception for Oak Ridge as time wound down.
Gaddis said the young Webb team is better than the score indicates.
Oak Ridge will play Campbell County (5-4, 3-1) in the last game of the regular season on Friday, October 30. The winner will have home-field advantage in the first game of the playoffs.
