After a short slump, the Oak Ridge girls soccer team got “back on the winning track” in a 2-0 win over Knoxville Catholic at home on Monday.
The Lady Wildcats (11-3, 4-1 District 3-Class AAA) scored one goal in each half. The first was by sophomore Zoe Van Hook with 3:38 remaining in the first half. She curled left from the center of the goal box and kicked the ball into the right side of the net from the left side of the box, past goalkeeper Katie Whitaker. Oak Ridge junior Olivia Hoyt got the assist on that goal.
Senior Katie Welsh scored the second goal for Oak Ridge after a corner kick by senior Ellie Brown. The ball bounced around a bit in front of the net before Welsh kicked it into the left side of the net past Catholic goalkeeper Miriam Janoyan at 12:55 in the second half.
“I think it was a good effort, back on the winning track,” Oak Ridge Coach Jeff Trombly said.
The two teams finished evenly matched in shots on goal: 9-9.
Oak Ridge senior midfielder Alex Allen was injured midway through the first half and could be out the rest of the season with a possible broken collarbone. Trombly said Allen was hit from behind and was not aware of the player behind her.
The Lady Wildcats also played Monday without freshman forward Kate Hausladen, who was out for orchestra activities.
Trombly said there were a lot of personnel changes on Monday, including moving sophomore Alex Rouse and freshman Kelsie Giannelli to back positions.
After winning the first 10 games of the season, Oak Ridge had lost three of its last four games, falling to Powell, Farragut, and Hardin Valley in the past month, but beating Gibbs.
The game against Catholic (6-4-1, 5-1 District 4-Class A-AA) was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, but had been rescheduled. A Thursday, October 1, game between Oak Ridge and Bearden was canceled because of weather.
The Lady Wildcats, who have only one district loss (to Powell), have one game left in the regular season. It’s at home at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 6, against Knoxville Webb.
Oak Ridge is the second seed in the district and will start the playoffs at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 13. They don’t know who they’ll play yet.
