Second Opinion, an Oak Ridge-based physician band, has donated $2,211 to the Hospitality Houses of Methodist Medical Center. The donation was from the band’s participation in Doc Rock for Health, an annual battle of the bands, which was hosted by the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Alliance at Knoxville’s Old City earlier this year.
On June 19, Kim Maes, coordinator of the Hospitality Houses, was presented with the check. The houses have been the band’s longtime charity of choice for the event. Their participation has helped raise more than $10,000 for the Hospitality Houses.
Methodist’s Hospitality Houses primarily provide free lodging to families and patients who travel to Methodist for cancer treatment, as well as other outpatients who require extended treatment.
“We are so grateful for this contribution to the Hospitality Houses and Second Opinion’s long tradition of support,†Maes said. “It’s the individuals and groups of community members, like Second Opinion, who really help us keep our doors open to guests who need a place to find relief when traveling for medical care.â€
Four physician bands performed at Doc Rock. The bands competed to earn the most cover charge proceeds, all of which benefited their chosen health charities.
Second Opinion’s Doc Rock performance included Methodist Medical Center retired physicians gastroenterologist Ken Luckmann, MD; and otolaryngologist John Jernigan, MD; plus Parkwest radiologist Daryl Harp, MD; along with friends of Methodist: Melissa Carter, Tim Comer, David Lynch, and Todd Wright.
“It’s something we’ve been doing for years,†Luckmann said. “We always have fun performing, and the Hospitality Houses are a worthwhile organization.â€
Maes noted: “Second Opinion has been a long-time supporter of the Hospitality Houses. Their contribution through Doc Rock not only provides financial support but also helps to bring awareness of the Hospitality Houses and our mission to surrounding communities. Thanks for all that you do.â€
