Claudio Barrientos, director of the Mindful Center in Knoxville, will present a program on mindfulness meditation on Saturday, June 7, at Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge. The free 90-minute program, which begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall, is hosted by the church’s Mental Health Ministry Team.

Grace Lutheran Church is located at 131 W. Gettysburg Ave.

Barrientos will introduce ways to incorporate a few minutes of meditation in one’s daily life to help with many health issues, a press release said. The teachings are non-religious and evidence-based, rooted in the latest science of the mind, body, and brain, according to notes from Barrientos about the program.

“In this 90-minute program, participants progress through an introductory study and practice of mindfulness meditation: what it is, how to do it in our daily lives to reduce stress, manage pain, help with sleep issues, weight issues, healing processes and more, and how it enables our ability to participate in our own health and well-being,” he said.

The Mindful Center was founded in New Mexico by Jim DuVal, an intern of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine emeritus and creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Barrientos, who received five years of immersive training in mindfulness across the range of practice and its application for health, healing, and stress reduction from both DuVal and the New Mexico Center’s current director, Michelle DuVal, teaches the meditation practice at Provision Health and Performance, a part of Provision Health Alliance and the Provision Center of Proton Therapy. He also teaches mindfulness-based workplace workshops across East Tennessee.

Barrientos has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion from the University of San Francisco and has a devoted personal mindfulness meditation practice.

All who are interested in promoting health and healing in their lives are invited to attend this event, the press release said.
