Anderson County Republican Party has open house Tuesday

The Anderson County Republican Party will have a community open house between 6 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Midtown Community Center in Oak Ridge.

“This is an opportunity to learn about the Republican Party and meet local office holders and candidates, who will be there to share ideas and gain input for the upcoming elections,” a press release said.

The Midtown Community Center is located at 102 Robertsville Road, at the intersection with Oak Ridge Turnpike. Refreshments will be served.

Judge Don A. Layton of the Anderson County General Sessions Court will be the featured speaker at the open house. Layton will talk about recent initiatives in the Anderson County judiciary. One of these initiatives, the Anderson County Electronic Monitoring Program, was instituted in 2011 to ease overcrowding in the Anderson County Jail.

The monitoring program uses electronic ankle bracelets to place certain non-violent misdemeanor offenders under house arrest, as an alternative to incarceration, the press release said. Ankle bracelets can also be used in conjunction with traditional bonds, as an extra measure of protection in certain cases of suspected domestic abuse. When used this way, the bracelets alert authorities immediately if the wearer gets within one mile of the prohibited address.

The Electronic Monitoring Program has enjoyed a high success rate since it was first instituted, the release said. It has saved a substantial amount of tax money, since housing a prisoner in the Anderson County Jail system costs the taxpayer an estimated $60 dollars per day.

Layton is a 1972 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law and a frequent speaker at judicial conferences. He is also a past president of the Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference.

“I invite all who are interested in the Republican Party to attend our open house,” said Aaron Wells, chairman of the Anderson County Republican Party. “It should be a great evening.”
