The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s 70th musical season, “Excellence to the Second Degree, Bringing you Music that Matters,†will offer Oak Ridgers performances from the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Series of concerts, and the Oak Ridge Chorus.
The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Dan Allcott, will open the season in October with “A Double Dose of Awesomeness†featuring music by Johannes Brahms with violinist Wei Tsun Chang and cellist Wesley Baldwin performing the Brahms’ Double Concerto. That performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the performing arts center at Oak Ridge High School.
The Oak Ridge Chorus will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at First United Methodist Church under the baton of its new director Seth Maples. Musical selections include “When I Hear Music,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and a selection of spirituals.
A holiday celebration featuring the Orchestra and Chorus with Sound Company will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 15, again at the performing arts center at ORHS. Excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah,” holiday favorites, and a portion of John Rutter’s “Mass of the Children” will be featured. The musical evening invites concertgoers to sing along with seasonal tunes.
“A Baroque Bonanza†at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, will include double concertos, one each by Bach and Vivaldi. Karen Kartal and Susan Eddlemon will be featured on violins in Bach’s “Concerto for Two Violins,” while Ihsan Kartal and conductor Allcott will highlight Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Two Cellos.”
The orchestra and chorus will present “Magnificent March†at 7:30 p.m. March 22, 2014 at ORHS with guest soloist Katy Wolfe Zahn. Verdik’s “Satbat Mater – Te Deum,” Gorecki’s excerpt from “Symphony No. 3,” and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5.”
Music from “Gone with the Wind,†“Raiders of the Lost Ark,†and other movie musical favorites will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 12, 2014, at ORHS.
The Oak Ridge Chorus will conclude ORCMA’s season with musical selections from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” and Aaron Copeland’s “The Tender Land.” The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 3, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.
ORCMA’s Chamber Concert Season begins with double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the ORHS. Meyer was raised in Oak Ridge.
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the New Hope Center Auditorium at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The Cumberland Piano Trio—which includes violinist Susan Eddlemon, pianist Emi Kagawa, and cellist and orchestra conductor Dan Allcott—are joined by percussionist Scott Eddlemon in the world premier of a work by Canadian composer Janet Danielson. The concert will also include Beethoven’s “Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, Op 97.” The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8, 2014, in the Pollard Auditorium on the campus of Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
The Doric String Quartet will play at 7:30 p.m. March 29, 2014, at the Pollard Auditorium.
The Chamber Series will conclude with a performance by renowned flutist Eugenia Zuckerman at 7:30.m. April 26 also at the Pollard Auditorium.
Individual tickets for any performances by the Symphony Orchestra are $25 for adults and $8 per student, with school identification, while students 18 years old and younger are admitted free. Chorus-only concert tickets are $15 for adults. Ticket prices for the Chamber series are $25 for adult, while youth and young adult ticket prices are $10, except for the Edgar Meyer concert.
Due to the exceptional renown of Edgar Meyer, all vouchers, complimentary, bonus and sponsor tickets will be suspended for this performance. Individual tickets for the Edgar Meyer concert will be priced at $35. Seating is open.
Subscription prices for all five orchestra and chorus concerts are $120 for adults, $90 for new adult subscribers, $20 for college students, and $10 for youth.
Chamber series subscriptions for six concerts are $120 for adults, $90 for new adult subscribers, and $50 for youth and college students.
Combined subscription prices (orchestra, chamber and chorus) are $220 for adults, $160 for new subscribers, $50 for college students, and $40 for youth.
