Edwin M. Kidd, 86, beloved father of Sherry Stewart, Nora Black, Jerry, Katrina, and Kevin Kidd, died Monday, April 8, at Greenfield Senior Living Center surrounded by his family.

Edwin was born in Pine Knot, Ky., on Aug. 25, 1926, and he was a member of the 1943 Pine Knot High School graduating class. He served as a signalman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He attended Cumberland College, Eastern Kentucky University, and the University of Tennessee, graduating with a master’s degree in mathematics. He taught mathematics at McCreary County High School before moving to Oak Ridge with his wife, Nila, in 1951 to work as a computer programmer at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (K-25). He retired from Union Carbide after 29 years but continued to work for various Defense and Energy Department contractors as a project manager in Oak Ridge and Chicago into his 70s. He was also a part-time faculty member at the University of Tennessee. He was of the Baptist faith.

A man who valued commitment to family above all is survived by his children; his sons-in-law, Larry Stewart and Clifford Black; his brother Bill Kidd; and his grandsons, Derek Stewart (Isabella Angelini) and Darren Stewart (Donna); and his great-grandchildren Ariella, Dario, and Nila. He is survived by and will be missed by family and friends, including many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nila Ball Kidd; his parents Elmon and Edna; and his siblings Edgar Allan, Christine, and Estol.

Mr. Kidd’s children would like to thank the staff at Greenfield and Caris Healthcare for their loving care and friendship toward their father. Donations may be made to the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, 395 Belgrade Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, in lieu of flowers.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with Janie Carter officiating. The graveside service will be Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
