The Oak Ridge Fire Department has been hosting the Tennessee Fire Academy for a Fire Officer I and II class, a press release said.
ORFD has been hosting the class with the Tennessee Fire Service and Code Academy. It started the first week of January and will end the last week of March.
The class is a four-week, 120-hour class, taught during a three-month period, the press release said. The students attend class eight hours a day, four days a week, and they complete nightly homework assignments.
There are 18 firefighters from Oak Ridge Fire Department and five from the Athens Fire Department attending the class, which prepares firefighters to become company officers, the press release said. After completing the 120 hours of training and 17 homework assignments, the candidates demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability through written and practical examinations administered by the Tennessee Commission on Fire Fighting.
The release said the officer candidates must demonstrate that they meet the performance objectives of the National Fire Protection Association 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications.
“Although this is a State Fire Academy class, additional areas of specialized study are being introduced to assist in the professional development of the firefighters,” the press release said. “This includes presentations by city department heads, community leaders, and news media guests as the students study the overall operation of city government.”
The press release said the class meets the training objectives detailed in the Fire Department 2011 Strategic Plan and Mission statement to provide professional development for the city’s company officers. This class and a Fire Commission Certification as Fire Officer I are required for officer promotion in the Oak Ridge Fire Department.
