The day after President Barack Obama announced his support for gay marriage, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann announced his opposition.
“I could not disagree more with the president’s support for gay marriage,” said Fleischmann, a Tennessee Republican whose district includes Oak Ridge. “Marriage is the union of one man and one woman, period. This principle has been the bedrock of our Judeo-Christian family values, and stable families remain the key to a healthy society.”
In a statement issued today, the first-term congressman said he has fought the Obama administration “on this issue from the beginning.”
Fleischmann said he has joined his colleagues in demanding that the president uphold the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that “recognizes that marriage is between a man and woman.”
Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage during an interview with ABC News on Wednesday.
