There will be an open house in Oak Ridge on Thursday to discuss the proposed new federal landfill in Bear Creek Valley, west of the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The open house is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 8, in the Scarboro Community Center.
“After much work and coordination with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, we are excited to share that the three parties recently signed the final Record of Decision (ROD) for the Environmental Management Disposal Facility (EMDF) project,” the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management said in a notice posted on its website.
“We know there is a high level of interest in this important project, and we remain committed to our promise of keeping the community informed about any new developments or details,” DOE said.
The Thursday evening event will be an open house poster session, the notice said.
“In addition to the information shared on these posters, we will also have top subject matter experts from our team on hand to discuss updates and personally answer any questions you may have,” DOE said.
The information shared during the event will focus on:
- the planning process,
- site preparation activities,
- the Field Demonstration Project,
- anticipated timeline for construction, and
- future work enabled by EMDF.
DOE has said it needs the new landfill as the current one, the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility, fills up and additional site cleanup work occurs at Y-12 and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The new landfill, the EMDF, has been the subject of multiple community meetings and many discussions between DOE, EPA, and TDEC.

The Scarboro Community Center is located at 148 Carver Avenue in Oak Ridge.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
