Anderson County Schools will be closed through the end of Spring Break on March 27, and extracurricular activities are being suspended. The Clinton Community Center will be closed through at least March 30.
The school system closure is to be cautious and to be in accordance with the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about social distancing, Anderson County Schools said.
The school system is closing its buildings to all outside organizations.
Teachers and staff members were expected to report to work on Monday, March 16 to begin preparing an alternative education plan for students.
Responding to COVID-19, the CDC has recommended that people do not congregate together to help make the social distancing plan effective, the school system said.
On Sunday, the CDC recommended canceling or postponing large events or mass gatherings that have 50 or more people in the next eight weeks.
Clinton City Manager Roger Houck said the closure of the Clinton Community Center is to protect the health and well-being of visitors. All recreational activities, including youth softball and baseball, are canceled.
“Our nation’s effort is to slow the spread of the coronavirus,” Houck said in an announcement. “These are uncertain times, and everyone must make their best effort to help flatten the curve of the spread of this virus.”
Houck said the Center should re-open and return to a normal schedule when Clinton City Schools are back in session.
Clinton city staff members will use the closure time to thoroughly clean all city facilities, Houck said.
