Many roads in Oak Ridge were covered by a wet, slushy snow on Sunday morning, and some were slippery even when they appeared relatively clear.
The Oak Ridge Police Department said there were slick spots coming into Oak Ridge from Solway.
Oak Ridge Today measured about 5/8 inch of snow on a sidewalk in one spot mid-morning Sunday.
Main roads such as Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike were mostly clear, with slush in some spots such as the median, while side streets remained snow-covered.
By noon Sunday, though, the ORPD said conditions on primary and secondary roads were beginning to improve with the slight rise of the temperature.
“Some slick spots still remain,” the ORPD said. “Use caution and drive slowly if you must get out.”
The National Weather Service said a very moist southern storm system reaching the Southeast coast was producing a number of hazards.
“Winter weather of snow and ice from Arkansas to the southern Appalachians, with significant snow accumulations and extremely difficult travel for the latter to the Piedmont of North Carolina and southwest Virginia,” the National Weather Service said.
Rain and snow are possible before 2 p.m. Sunday, then rain is likely between 2 and 5 p.m., according to the forecast for Oak Ridge by the National Weather Service in Morristown.
There is a a chance of rain and snow after 5 p.m., with a high near 38, and the chance of precipitation is 90 percent, the NWS said. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
Sunday night, there is a chance of rain and snow before 10 p.m., then a chance of snow, with a low around 32. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
The chance of snow continues until about 10 a.m. Monday, and then there is a chance of rain, the NWS said.
