The Community Education and Development group is hosting viewings and discussions of the PBS series, “The Dictator’s Playbook.â€
You can join them from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, November 17, in the social hall of Oak Ridge Universal Unitarian Church, 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, to learn about Francisco Franco’s rise and fall, a press release said. This is the fifth of six sessions, with each session covering a dictator who arose to infamy in the 20th century, the press release said. A final discussion and reception will be held on Sunday, December 8.
“One of the goals of the meetings is to identify areas where we can strengthen our understanding of where our society is vulnerable and to identify specific pillars of knowledge that we need to have in place to guard our democracy,” the press release said. “Our study of Noriega demonstrated the importance of having a solid electoral process with verifiable election results to maintaining a strong democracy as well as having a smooth transition of power. We have to have tools to understand the source of our information and to know the difference between opinions and fact-based news. Civics and citizenship education is crucial for understanding our roles as citizens and the checks and balances lined out in the constitution. Another essential element is the rule of law that requires the government to exercise its power in accordance with well-established and clearly written rules, regulations, and legal principles.”
Organizers invite you to consider joining them in the study of authoritarian dictators. The mission of the Community Education and Development group, a shared ministry of ORUUC, is to examine and discuss events that have shape the state of our world and how society can change in ways that uplift or degrade humanity, the press release said.
