An apartment resident on East Tennessee Avenue was pulled to safety and taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after his food caught fire on a stove on Wednesday, October 28, authorities said.

The resident, identified as Earnest Hurd, was cooking supper when he fell asleep at approximately 10:19 p.m. Wednesday, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release. People passing by saw smoke coming from the apartment and called 911 dispatchers, who then dispatched the Oak Ridge Fire Department and Oak Ridge Police Department.

ORPD was the first to arrive and saw Hurd lying on the floor of the apartment, the press release said. ORPD opened the door and pulled the occupant to safety just as ORFD arrived.

Hurd was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Authorities said the fire was contained to the stove and range hood with only smoke damage to the apartment and contents. ORFD removed the smoke and checked the other three apartments for damage.

The ORFD responded with three engines, the tower truck, Rescue 30, a battalion chief and the fire chief, totaling 13 personnel. All other occupants of the apartments were okay and returned to their apartment shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, the release said.

“The extent of Mr. Hurds condition was not thought to be life-threatening,” the release said.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
