The undefeated Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats won the championship soccer game 2-0 in the Science Hill Tournament in Johnson City on Saturday night.
The Lady Wildcats beat Tates Creek High School of Lexington, Kentucky, in the final game, Oak Ridge Coach Jeff Trombly said. It was Oak Ridge’s third match of the tournament.
The score was 0-0 at halftime in the competitive championship game, Trombly said. The two teams were fairly even in terms of shots on goal, he said.
Trombly said freshman forward Kate Hausladen scored first for Oak Ridge at about the 65th minute on a cross behind the defense from junior right back Leah Scudder.
Senior forward Macy Barclay scored the second goal for Oak Ridge with about five minutes left in the game. Running from a distance, the right-footed Barclay ran across the face of the goal to the left and kicked the ball with her left foot, Trombly said. The ball went over the goalkeeper’s shoulder, he said.
“That was really a well-struck goal,†Trombly said. He called it the goal of the tournament for Oak Ridge.
During the tournament, the Lady Wildcats defeated Jefferson County of Tennessee 3-1 on Friday and George Rogers Clark High School of Winchester, Kentucky, 2-0 on Saturday to advance to the championship game.
“It was significant in the sense that we were able to compete against two out-of-state teams,†Trombly said of the tournament and the championship win. “It’s really important for confidence-building and competitiveness.â€
Barclay had three goals during the tournament, Hausladen had two, and senior defender Katie Welsh and freshman forward Valerie Carter each had one.
Oak Ridge only gave up one goal at Science Hill High School. Trombly said Oak Ridge senior goalkeeper Jasmine Rizk played outstanding throughout the tournament and so did central defenders Olivia Hoyt and Lindsey Riikola, both juniors.
The tournament concluded five games in five days for the Lady Wildcats. It took a lot of commitment to play all those games, Trombly said.
Oak Ridge is now 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the district.
The Lady Wildcats have a home game against Grace Christian of Knoxville at 7 p.m. Tuesday and a district game at Powell at 6 p.m. Thursday.
