Sallie B. Cornell, age 99, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Greenfield of Oak Ridge.
Sallie was born October 16, 1914, in Coffee County, Alabama, to the late Robert Luther and Sallie Fleming Buxton. She moved to Oak Ridge in 1949 and was employed for 30 years at Y-12 as a secretary assistant before her retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church Oak Ridge and loved working in the church and all of her church family. Sallie and her late husband were members of Dean Hill Country Club, and she enjoyed reading, playing bridge, cooking, and sewing.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Harold E. Cornell; great-grandson, Andrew William Branner; and several brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
Sallie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Thomas Wilborn; granddaughters, Betsy Mallory and her husband Matt, and Susan Branner and her husband Keith; great grandsons, Luke Mallory, Zachary Branner, and William Branner;; brother John Buxton and his wife Kathy, and several nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Tuesday, August 12, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home followed by a graveside service officiated by Rev. Jenny Caughman at 2:30 p.m. in the Masonic garden of Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
