The Oak Ridge Police Department is looking for drivers who are speeding, texting, or driving while impaired in a focused traffic enforcement operation that started June 18 and continues through Labor Day weekend, a press release said.
It’s called Operation Drive Safe, and it will be conducted on Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue. Police are also looking for other traffic-related violations and watching for drivers who do not yield to pedestrians within a crosswalk.
“The Oak Ridge Police Department wants everyone to have a safe summer and share the road whether it’s with another vehicle, cyclist, or pedestrian,” a press release said.

Dontcha know this is just going to kill business in Oak Ridge for the next three months? Mark my words, drivers are going to be avoiding the Turnpike and Illinois, taking alternate routes and driving through through a certain councilwoman’s front yard. It’s obvious that this operation is not about safety because it’s scheduled to end just after school begins. ORPD might as well call it “Operation Revenue.” Oh, the humanity!

This program is needed and very helpful while this city is filled with students from regional colleges. I know officers do this when needed, but I applaud their effort to concentrate this during rowing and the beginning of school. It is a great effort of security no camera can do. I’m sure they will be issuing jaywalking tickets to help drivers as well on the Turnpike and Illinois Ave.
