A University of Tennessee professor will discuss campaign finance laws and U.S. politics during Lunch with the League on Tuesday.
Jon Shefner is professor and head of the Sociology Department at the University of Tennessee. He will be the guest speaker at Lunch with the League at noon Tuesday. The meeting will be held in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
“The ties between economic interests and political power are repeated throughout American history,” a press release said. “Political sociologist Dr. Jon Shefner will review the history of campaign finance laws and the efforts of organizations and individuals to thwart reforms. He will also touch on the growth of highly financed corporate-funded organizations such as the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC drafts ‘model bills’ on a variety of issues for state and federal legislators to introduce. Dr. Shefner’s observations will be particularly timely because in Tennessee this year will see the election of governor, U.S. senator and representatives, state representatives, and numerous local officials.”
Lunch with the League is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, and it is open to the public. There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $8, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
