Here is a calendar of events for Anderson County in May:

  • Spring Colors Train Ride and Dinner Trains—May 3 and 17 at Secret City Excursion Train

Southern Appalachian Railway Museum is offering one-hour excursions with narration on May 3 and 17. Departure times will be 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. During the ride, passengers will hear the story of the Manhattan Project, which was one of the most remarkable industrial achievements ever accomplished. There will also be a dinner train on the 3 and 17 at 6 p.m. Diners will be treated to a delicious entrée prepared by Chef Andras.   • Annual Plant Sale beginning May 8 at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its annual Plant Sale starting Thursday, May 8, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The sale will continue for two weeks, but for the best selection shop early. Wildflowers, bushes, ferns, herbs and other plants will be available. This is a great way to get locally hardy plants at low prices. Baked goods will also be available.   • Anderson County Emergency Preparedness Fair—May 10 at Clinton Community Center

May 10 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., you can check out over 40 booths on emergency preparedness from ORNL Emergency Management, Y-12 Emergency Management, ORISE, Anderson County Emergency Management, Red Cross, Lodge Dutch Oven Outlet, The Grain Loft, Shelf Reliance, and many more. From severe weather and disaster management to storing food and water, the Emergency Preparedness Fair has something for the whole family. In addition to popular classes such as food preservation, family disaster planning and bread baking, this year’s lineup will also feature a panel of experts, ranging from first responders to government officials, who will be available to answer questions from the public during a classroom discussion.   • May Exhibits at American Museum of Science and Energy

May 1-31 Atomic Energy is a LIFE magazine exhibition—the vintage 24-photographic panel exhibition portrays the constructive uses of atomic energy and the need for international control. Artifacts displayed are the exhibits shipping crate, an exhibition pamphlet and several books mentioned in the pamphlet. May 1-31 registration is open for AMSE Science Explorer Camp for rising 5th, 6th and 7th graders. Camps will be June 9-13 and June 16-20 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at historic Freels bend Cabin in Oak Ridge. Check out AMSE’s website for more info on the camps. May 4th is Penny4Arts Performance at AMSE for Knox County students and their families. Admission will be one penny for students when accompanied by a paying parent. Visitors must have proof of Knox County residency. May 9 is Homeschool Friday “Insects: Friend or Foe” at Freels Bend Cabin for grades K-6.   • Registration for Imagination Station Summer Camp at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge is open

Camp sessions will be held from June 9 to August 8. There are 75 sessions for children aged preschool through rising 7th grade. Information is available by calling (865) 482-1074 or visiting www.childrensmuseumofoakridge.org/camps/.

  • Great Smoky Mountain Trail Ride-May 12-17 at Windrock Park

  • May Classes at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is offering multiple classes throughout the month of May. Some of these classes include “Learn to Sew,” and “Stained Glass Suncatcher.” For information on the class times, how to register, and prices call (865) 494-9854 or visit www.appalachianarts.net.

  • Barn Dance—May 30 at Museum of Appalachia

The Museum of Appalachia, a Smithsonian Affiliate museum, will host its second annual Barn Dance, to be held on Friday, May 30. The evening will feature horse drawn wagon rides, a sumptuous southern buffet dinner, and traditional Appalachian dancing accompanied by live music.   • “Wing Night”—Every Friday Night at Sequoyah Marina

Start off your weekends on Friday night with Sequoyah’s famous “Wing Night” at the dock. The first wing night of the season will be May 16. Sequoyah Marina serves the best wings on Norris Lake. For more information, call (865) 494-7984 or visit www.sequoyahmarina.net.

  • Sundown Saturday’s—Beginning Memorial Weekend at Stardust Marina
