Lucille Brown

Lucille Brown, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully at the age of 99, on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.

She was born in Crenshaw, Miss., to Robert and Mary Jane Haynes. She received her B.S. degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., and her M.S. degree from the University of Tennessee. She taught school in Mississippi before moving to Oak Ridge in 1944 with her husband, Harold A. Stevens, who was with the training department at Carbide, K-25. He died in 1948.

She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Euple Gates, Vernece Methvin, and Bobby Hunter. Mrs. Brown taught school in Oak Ridge Schools from 1944-1977 and retired from Willow Brook Elementary School. She enjoyed painting, crafts, reading, bridge, and traveling. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Organization, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority, and the Clinch Bend Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1946 and taught Sunday school for 15 years. She did volunteer work at the church until June 2013.

She married her college sweetheart, James Brown, in 1967. They enjoyed traveling for several years. Mr. Brown died in 1994.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Mary Jane and Mike Randolph; three grandchildren, John, Sissy and fiancé Adam Byram, and Amy; and one great-grandson, two-year-old Kellan.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 1–2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. A Celebration of Life will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jenny Caughman officiating. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Retired Teacher’s Scholarship Fund, Becky Blake, 164 Cumberland View Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
