Obituary: Edgar Ray Sutton

Edgar Ray Sutton, age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Signature Health Care of Rogersville.

He was the son of Fred H. and Winnie Mae Sutton.

Mr. Sutton retired in 1983 from the Oak Ridge school system, where he served as principal at Woodland Elementary School. He also sold real estate for a short time and worked with ETHRA. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and had served as deacon. He enjoyed researching family history and genealogy, and he was a Bible scholar.

He is survived by his wife, Darla Howe Sutton; sons, John Fred Sutton and wife Cynthia of Karns, and Dr. James Edward Sutton and wife Kendra of Royse City, Texas; daughter, Jennifer Sutton Yow and husband Avery of Powell; brother, Ermal Sutton and wife Wanda of LaFollette; grandchildren, Savannah and Sophie Sutton, Chandler and Madeline Sutton, Christa Hayes and husband Chris, Korbin Bryant and wife Rachel, Jeffrey and Douglas Redford, Joey, Christopher and Brittany Yow; great-grandchildren, Conner and Kenslee Hayes and Lily Bryant; aunt, Ova Carter of Surgoinsville; and niece, Glynis Sutton of Lafollette.

The family received friends on Friday, Dec. 13, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church. The funeral followed at 5:30 p.m. with Rev. Tim Borchert officiating. Family and friends will meet on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for a graveside service. Memorials can be made to the Youth Ministry of First Baptist Church or to the Woodland Elementary School Library.
