An assistant economics professor at the University of Tennessee will discuss the virtues and limits of free markets during a noon lecture Tuesday.
Marianne Wanamaker will be the guest speaker at Lunch with the League at lunchtime Tuesday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. Her presentation is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.
Wanamaker is an assistant professor in the Department of Economics in the University Of Tennessee’s College of Business Administration.
“Americans, in general, have a preference for capitalism and free markets,” a League of Women Voters press release said. “This preference is based on experience and theory that is centuries in the making. Yet, at the same time, there is a body of evidence challenging the free market dogma, both in terms of its success and its moral character. Dr. Wanamaker will explore the moral content and consequences of capitalism. She will address the challenges of the limits of free markets in achieving the ‘right’ outcome. She will also examine the latest research on ethical decision-making in business.”
The meeting is open to the public, and it will be in the Social Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church, which is at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $8, or you may bring your own. Coffee and tea are provided.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that encourages informed and active participation in government and works to increase understanding of public policy through unbiased studies of public issues, the press release said. Membership is open to both men and women. For more information, visit lwvoakridge.org.
