With many girls looking for Girl Scout troops to become a part of amid a shortage of adult volunteers, the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians invites adult volunteers to apply for a role within Anderson County’s network of active troops.
GSCSA reports that there is a waiting list of girls who want to become part of a troop within Anderson County but cannot due to a lack of enough adult volunteers.
“A lot of people don’t know that you don’t have to be the mom of a girl to be a Girl Scout volunteer,” said GSCSA Chief Executive Officer Booth Kammann. “Dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, or anyone else looking to help girls in their community to learn and grow within a troop’s many activities and adventures is invited to apply for a volunteer role.”
Girl Scouts requires at least two adults when working with girls, one of whom must be a female. GSCSA includes men who have spent several years as the leader of their daughter’s troop or helped with events. They have enjoyed the opportunity to spend more time with their daughter and gained a better connection to the community.
Girl Scouts has volunteer opportunities for everyone—regardless of available time to volunteer. Whether someone has only an hour per week, per month, or per year to give, GSCSA will be able to find a volunteer opportunity that is right.
To become a volunteer, adults ages 18 or older should complete the adult volunteer application process (including a background check), enroll as an adult member of Girl Scouts of the USA (a $15 membership), and complete training for a selected volunteer role.
