Secret City Sounds continues its Summer Concert Series with The Freight Hoppers at 7 p.m. Friday at A.K. Bissell Park in Oak Ridge.
It’s the second show in the 2013 series, and it’s presented by the Arts Council of Oak Ridge and the City of Oak Ridge.
The Freight Hoppers have been presenting old-time string band music for more than 20 years, a press release said.
“The band started presenting their energetic take on fiddle band music four times a day, seven days a week at the Great Smoky Mountains Railway shortly after forming back in 1992,” the release said. “This afforded the group plenty of paid rehearsal time to hone a sound that has proven entertaining and distinctively theirs. Their repertoire includes music that was first recorded in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and spans geographically from Mississippi to West Virginia. The Freight Hoppers play hard-driving, old-time music with an emotional, raw excitement that keeps one foot planted in the past and the other in the present.”
All Secret City Sounds concerts are free of charge, so bring a blanket or a chair and set up on the lawn behind the pavilion at Bissell Park for a great night of music, the press release said. Food, ice cream, and beverages will be available.

The Freight Hoppers put on a fabulous show, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect! Many thanks to the Arts Council and the City for continuing the concert series; it’s one of those sweet things that keeps Oak Ridge a great place to live.

Sorry I missed most of it, but I got to enjoy the last two songs. I remember former City Manager Jim O’Connor envisioned these concerts as a smaller version of “Sundown in the City.” I’m also pleased to see the Arts Council and city continuing this series. It sounds like City Manager Mark Watson has some ideas for other types of entertainment events as well.
