Oak Ridge City Council Budget Meeting

The Oak Ridge City Council will consider the municipal budget, which is not expected to raise property taxes, during a second and final reading Tuesday evening.

The Oak Ridge City Council will consider the municipal budget on second and final reading tonight.

If approved, the budget would not raise property taxes, but it would give employees a 1 percent pay raise and add another $50,000 for the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce contract.

Tonight’s meeting also includes a presentation of the Oak Ridge Schools’ budget, which was approved on second and final reading on Thursday.

Also on the City Council agenda are a presentation of a B&W Y-12 sponsorship for the Secret City Festival in June, a resolution allowing property at 148 Hillside Road to be transferred to Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County after a fire destroyed a home there, and another resolution covering $36,000 in repairs to a sinkhole under the Oak Ridge High School soccer field.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building Courtroom.

The next fiscal year starts July 1.

I urge Council to fully fund the school system even if other areas sustain cuts.

You are a good man Mike, but the schools are doing well at their current level of funding. How else could the leadership bring in a new Super at $43k more than the previous one, award bonuses to the school employees who are at the top of their pay scale, and still refuse to pay their share of the high school mortgage payment. I urge Council to stand firm on the allotted tax dollars for the school budget. Our very good school system is doing just fine. Just my view….
