Jane Haywood Higgins

Jane Haywood Higgins, age 89, formerly of Oak Ridge passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville.

Jane was born in Cornersville, Tenn., on July 13, 1923, to the late Shelby Marsh and Margaret Burgess Haywood.

She attended Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville and was recruited to work in Oak Ridge during World War II. It was there that she met her husband of 65 years, Robert.

She was a charter member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Jane was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to many. She was a true people person who loved life and had an outgoing personality.

She was a former member of the Friendship Force, Oak Ridge 43 Club, Silver Tops, and Buckingham Community Association.

In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her sister Betty Gilbert, brothers Egbert Haywood and Shelby Haywood, and her son-in-law Ronnie Bright.

Jane is survived by her husband Robert Lee Higgins, son Alan Westra Higgins (Sara Morrison) of Raleigh, N.C., daughter Mae Higgins-Bright of Knoxville, granddaughter Hailey Bright of Los Angeles, Calif., grandson Devin Bright of Knoxville, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend June Young.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Oak Ridge with the Rev. Craig Kallio officiating. It was to be followed by the interment in the church memory garden and a reception in the church parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 212 N. Tulane Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

The family would like to thank the staff of Shannondale Health Care Center for their constant care and devotion.
